Product Description:

coconutWiFi displays you a small aqua-bubble at the top of your screen which indicates whether you're in range of a wireless network or not. The app also tells you if the wireless networks in your range are encrypted or open, so you won't miss the next open wireless network any more. It also shows up information about the found networks like the channel number or the bssid.

What's new in this version:

completely rewritten core, more additional information about networks (i.e. bssid & channel), much snappier UI, airport power control in menu

coconutWIFI worked great on my 17" MacBook Pro up to and including OS-X 10.5.6. Unfortunately it no longer works after the 10.5.7 update. A newer version would be greatly appreciated.
