Product Description:

Xtools is a full implementation of the X Windows system running on Mac OS X. Based on X11R6.6, Xtools inherits the clean, fast, stable, and portable codebase from Xfree86. Integration with the Aqua environment is enabled by building the X server on top of Cocoa and QuickDraw, providing a rootless X windows display while still retaining the ability to use native applications.

What's new in this version:

The new Xtools 1.2 supports the latest XFree86 4.2.1 and X11R6.6. Improvements have been made to on screen rendering, refresh & redraw operations, OpenGL & Motif, pseudocolor, visuals, antialias font suport, XDM, key mappiing, secure shell, and Jaguar support. There is also improved compatibility for CDE, KDE, and Gnome desktops and compatibility for Fink X11 applications. In addition, the new Xtools now alllows you to view Mac applcations on the X Window desktop while running in full (dedicated) screen mode (something none of the X11 Mac OS X alternatives can do!).

Apple's version, albiet beta, is much better. Not to mention free. Apple's version also runs under 4.2.1 (the current XFree86 is 4.3. According to the FAQ, Xtools doesn't support graphical excelleration in rooted window mode. Apple's X11 supports full OpenGL and Quartz (and, hence, graphics excelleration) while rooted. Tenon is also a bit behind the times--from their FAQ: "currently there is no downloadable version of Netscape for OS X."
