Fire Troubleshooting ReportLeopard issues? - Version: 1.5.6, 11/19/2007 08:43AM PST

I just upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) last night, and Fire doesn't work for me anymore. It freezes when it tries to connect to my account and then closes. Anyone else having this problem?

The lead developer puts it bluntly on the front page at http://www.fireim.org/

We are saddened to announce that there will be no future versions of Fire. There are several reasons for this end, but the most notable is the loss of developers. Fire's development had dwindled to few developers who do not wish to continue the project alone. In addition, another major contributing factor is the fact that all but one of Fire's IM libraries is no longer in active development.

Fire ReviewAgain problems with msn - Version: 1.5.6, 1/1/2007 02:33PM PST

..but please don't tell that Audium is better!
Where the infos profiles? The groups? (the console?) The off-line buddies?
Fire is slim, not obtrusive, elegant even if not 'nice while Audium is redundant, baroque, bloated like a vulgar microshit messenger.
There is not a better Fire, even if needed (audio/video/file transfer is not up to date for near all chats) and.. the ridiculous is that windoz users envy us for it!
When we will lose definitively Fire.. it will be a sad day!

If you go to the fire developers blog at http://blog.fireim.org/2006/09/25/images-lost-and-near-release/ you will find this note:

I was hoping to make the announcement sooner, but fire is effectively dead, for many reasons I will not go into here. We delayed the announcement for the release of version 1.0 of Adium because it includes a nice transition path from Fire to Adium. By not announcing until this transition path was in place, we could save the users a lot of grief. As such, the formal announcement will still wait.

Fire’s future is now mostly a design reference and some code for Adium’s future. BTW, two of the Fire developers (including myself) are officially members of the Adium team.”

I most likely would have missed it - except I was hunting down a current beta copy for 2.0_

Is this the case ? Is this effectively what is happening ?

If so - it sucks!! I’ve always viewed Adium as a lesser App than Fire_ I’vve had more stability issues with Adium as well_

I suppose I will end up doing something similar as I did when Microsoft ended production of IE for Mac and use Fire until it becomes greatly incompatible anymore before I switch to something else_

Fire ReviewThe last time... - Version: 1.5.6, 6/28/2006 05:03AM PST

The last time I used "Fire" was months and months ago, and one single bug was enough to send me back to iChat and (bork) Yahoo Messenger. I would try removing a "Buddy." I would click. Program would say "eek, eek, warning, you cannot undo this!" I would click on "OK" (after all said "Buddy" would be a spammer or a creep or a bigot or whatever) (This *is* after all, Instant Messaging.)

"Click." Buddy would disappear. One second later, "buddy" would RE-appear. And again, and again, and again. Soon my "buddy" list had more rectums in it than people I actually liked. Other people had the same problem. Nothing worked. After a few days of this, I gave up, abandoned "Fire" and switched back to the "default" programs, and believe me, "Messenger" is deFAULT.

Today, I tried "Fire" again. Several versions have passed in time. After all, it has been at least a year. The same bug has been lovingly preserved. As far as I am concerned, the "Fire" can burn out and the embers can be "watered."

Fire CommentaryI don't know why... - Version: 1.5.6, 2/19/2006 05:57AM PST

...a lot of people seem to hate Fire. It's a solid open source effort produced by people who really care about what they're doing. I'm sure Adium is great too, but Fire just plain works for me. Adium doesn't. If anyone's going to talk about how no one should use Fire and everyone should use Adium, the least you should do is download both clients and try them out together. That's what I did.

Fire ReviewDunno why you use this instead of Adium - Version: 1.5.5, 1/12/2006 04:23AM PST

I dunno why anyone would choose this program over Adium, although I haven't tried this in a while, I was using it back around when the latest version of it was 0.3, and looking at the product version pulldown, it jumped from v0.32 to v 1.0? That just sounds shady.

Adium's current version number is 0.8.7, but it might as well be 1.x. It's solid, it never crashes and I can connect to all my *IM services at once (I have about 5 AIM screennames, 2 Yahoo), though I don't use my webcam with it. My webcam doesn't do anything, I don't know why I bought it. The only thing it's good for is taking low res pictures when I don't feel like breaking out my digital camera.
