English automation exists: Take a look at Sergey Kurkin's JEDict 3.6.5 (http://jedict.com) -- a beautiful Carbon interface to Jim Breen's famous EDict dictionary/ies at the University of Monash. I agree with the general consensus regarding Nuku. Very nice.

There remains one app that I don't think anyone has written yet, and I'm taking this opportunity to make it an open call to anyone up to the challenge. I'd like to see a Romaji -> English translator. All current translators that I've seen assume Japanese text input, yet none do anything with romaji. I envision something that could take romaji input, translate it internally to kana, then do a language translation lookup from that. Someone? Anyone?

me, especially because it has one great feature that similar apps lack - the ability to select lines of kana to do tests on. This is great because I'm still learning hiragana, and it really helps to be able to pinpoint the exact lines I'm learning or having trouble remembering.

must be thinking about Kanji. Like Ragnarok already wrote, Hiragana and Katakana are "phonetic" characters, much like English alphabet. The characters represent sounds, not meanings. Kanji is a whole new set of characters (Chinese characters, actually) which Japanese language also uses extensively. Since Kanji is "pictorial" in nature, each Kanji characters have their own meanings, and there are literally thousands of them (tens of thousands if you counted obscure, less-often used ones too). Anyways, this is a great freeware tool for Japanese language learners. And I like that manga icon. ^o^v
