Product Description:

SMS+/MacOS is a Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear emulator for the Macintosh. The hardware for the Sega Master System and Game Gear consoles is almost identical from a technical standpoint, which means that when you emulate one, it is trivial to emulate the other. SMS Plus features accurate emulation of both systems, with full sound support. It can even use GZ compressed ROMs transparently.

What's new in this version:

  • Audio recording no longer stops when emulator is switched to background, provided that the option to keep emulating in background is on. Recording will still stop if the emulator does.
  • Brushed metal mode is now off by default on new installs, as well as existing installs where users press the Default button.
  • Fixed an obscure endian bug that resulted in odd window sizes when an emulator preferences file was moved between PowerPC and Intel.
  • Fixed several minor visual glitches in the Preferences dialog box.
  • Modified the behaviour of the Quick Freeze function, so that the last ten quick freezes for each game are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/Bannister/(emulator name)/Saved States. You can restore these at any time using the Defrost menu command. Added code to stop the quick freeze and quick defrost keys from being repeated. Thanks to David McCabe for the suggestion.
  • Replaced custom about box with standard HIAboutBox. Removed option to pause execution when about box is open.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • None

SMS Plus CommentaryOn the GPL... - Version: 1.0.2, 8/8/2003 09:07AM PST

You assume that joystick support is in the code he is porting over from source. This is incorrect. Joystick support is something he is adding in to the port, therefore he has every right to include it in a plugin and charge for it.

Besides, his emulator ports are perfectly playable with a keyboard and there's no charge for that.

SMS Plus ReviewIt's very nice... - Version: 1.0.1, 7/16/2003 10:41AM PST

But it is *not* freeware. It's crippled without joystick support. You have to download a shareware component of his and pay for it after your ten free executions run out. Because it's based on software released under version 2 of the GPL, it is morally (and legally) wrong of him to charge for a component that it links to; allowing it to link with such a component violates the GPL. At the least, it should be listed as shareware on VT. Nevertheless, I payed, because $15 unlocks nearly all of his emulators, which are good quality, and I don't have much of a choice if I want to use emulators on mac os x. Five stars for good software, minus one for the dirty trick. Tisk.

SMS Plus ReviewAnother fine emulator - Version: 1.0.1, 7/6/2003 03:38PM PST

Makes me wish I never sold my old SMS.

One thing though: starting up this version cause the prefs to get trashed, so I had to reconfigure my gampad, etc. Nothing big, just took me by surprise. 5 stars nonetheless.
