the devil is in the details... - Version: 6.17, 9/13/2004 01:06PM PST

work is kept on the server where it is backed up nightly. this is standard operating procedure at all the service bureaus and design/graphics shops. that being said, the "path" stamp feature offered by slugger does NOT work unless you open and save the file on the server. i can post the gluon email sent to me stating this (complete with expanded headers for those who are interested).
the fact that gluon does not require working off the server does not negate the fact that one of the most highly touted features of gluon slugger is it's ability to stamp the path of the file...which is ONLY possible if you open/save the document on the server. this assumes, of course, that you want the server path to the document on the slug as opposed to the local desktop path (which in most cases does not help workflow needs given most hard drives are named "Macintosh HD").
i can post gluon's email to me confirming these facts if you like...but you can keep your products. i support gluon (it's the best stuff you'll find out there for workflow needs), but i have a real issue with vendors who do not work with i.t. staff who point out problems that need to be fixed.
mcdonalds has been around longer than gluon but you don't see them defending thier food by tossing credentials on the table. the simple fact of the matter is that most i.t. staff in charge of managing mac workstations give their users what they want...whether the users are victims of marketing hype or whether the vendor is offering up commissions to those in the field who assist the vendor in saturating the market with their product.
our job as i.t. staff is to make things work. this involves working with vendors who are expected to fix problems and address issues. vendors who work with those of us who catch heat for these issues not only expect the level of support we require, but we demand it.
ps, for those who want to know, i called gluon to report an issue with an xtension. the issue has yet to be resolved. instead of fixing the problem, i was offered a commission to help sell more gluon products. as an i.t. support person, i turned down that offer and will continue to do so. i may accept free software for the sole reason of staying ahead of the curve, but i will not allow myself (and neither would any self-respecting i.t. support tech) to be "bought" so they keep quiet. i not only have emails to substantiate these posts...but i also have every telephone conversation in the past 10 years recorded to audio file (the tech group i work for requires this be done for legal reasons and at any time we can un-archive any voice conversation).
ps, i noticed the new updated released 9/2 fixes path issues...are there any details?

Slugger definitely DOES NOT require you to work off a server! - Version: 6.15, 7/28/2004 02:33PM PST

Slugger has been in use for 14 years at some of the world's top publishers. There is no way we could do that if we made it so you HAD to open files from a server. Not sure where this bogus info comes from but we'd love to make a wager about it...prove that we require this and get one copy of all our desktop software for free...worth thousands of dollars! FYI: Slugger can be configured to get a company logo or signoff EPS or TIFF from a server, but we recommend using a local copy. We also don't prevent you from opening files off a server either. We're easy.
