Apple Macintosh Manager ReviewLogin time issues… - Version: 2.2.1, 9/24/2002 01:07PM PST

deal with with network problems, not necessarily with Mac Manager in general. we noticed her that some clients would log in int 10 - 15 seconds and some would take almost 1 1/2 minutes. it ended up being a problem with the way our network was set up. if a client was on a different subnet than the server, then the logins took 10 times longer than normal. once we got our network in good working order, login times were consistent and fast (about 15 seconds with a class of 23 loging in at the same time). we use a DHCP server automatically assigning addresses, an iMac as the Mac Manager authentication server, and 3 document servers (G3 B&W, G4, G4 dual) - the document servers take most of the load (like 90%) in a login procedure. i am very willing to talk through issues with other MM users. my email is acarter@providenceday.org. we are a private school in NC, with 1450 students and 300 faculty/staff. i think we finally have the MM situation under control and most everything is running smoothly!!

Apple Macintosh Manager CommentaryI appreciate all… - Version: 2.1, 11/18/2001 03:54AM PST

the suggestions you've given me here. We diehard Mac fans will put up with a lot. I spent 2 months fine tuning MM, to the point where I think I could have set up a help desk myself. For students, (PreK-12), 30 - 45 second logins is unacceptable. I've chosen to use FoolProof Security to lock the desktop, (not to crazy about it but it works), AliasMenu, so students can pull down to their application of choice, and Default Folder, which defaults the user to the server of the school. From there they navigate to their class (Class of 2002 for example) and find their folder. To LOGIN, I use an applescript that points to the server and is accessed by an AliasMenu pull down from the menu bar. It really works well. My logins are 2 seconds.. I'm a huge apple fan, and at some point will revisit MM....but for now, I'd really like my teachers to begin to use computers with kids again.
