Product Description:

ExtremeZ-IP File Server software adds Macintosh file sharing (AppleShare) to Windows file servers. ExtremeZ-IP File Server is the first and only Windows-based file server that fully supports Mac OS X, making it a "must have" for mixed Mac and Windows computing environments. ExtremeZ-IP File Server delivers a stable and compatible platform for Mac file sharing making it the only choice in mission critical, production servers. Since 1999, ExtremeZ-IP's performance, compatibility, ease of use and reliability has made it the Mac connectivity tool of choice among thousands of organizations worldwide. ExtremeZ-IP File Server offers support for Apple's latest version of the AppleShareIP file sharing protocol, AFP 3.1. So unlike the alternatives, ExtremeZ-IP File Server supports all the important new Mac OS X features like long file names, file sizes over 2GB on the server, single sign-on authentication using Kerberos, and true compatibility between Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X files.

What's new in this version:

  • Added a dialog that warns administrators about the risks of sharing out the root of a drive. [#4298] [#4.2.2x07]
  • Made the "SleepInterval" registry key refreshable. [#6218] [4.2.2x01]
  • Improved performance of opening the Log window of the Administrator. [#2119] [#4.2.2x01]
  • Added a workaround for a problem where files saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 would cause Photoshop to crash when running on OS 10.4.6. This crash is a result of OS 10.4.6’s support for file comments greater than 128 characters and Photoshop CS2’s lack of support for these long comments. To activate this workaround, enable the "ServerTruncatesOS9Comments" registry key. This will cause all files with long comments that are written to an ExtremeZ-IP network volume to have their file comments truncated to 128 characters. See the help file for more details. [#6355] [4.2.2x07]
  • Fixed a problem where sleeping sessions would take 30 seconds to be disconnected from the Administrator. [#6335] [4.2.2x07]
  • Fixed a problem where search index files from different volumes could collide if stored in the same folder. [#6323] [4.2.2x07]
  • Fixed a problem where search indexing would not initialize properly on a volume that had previously failed to come online. [#6264] [4.2.2x06]
  • Fixed a problem where the service could crash while reindexing a volume's search index. [#6268] [4.2.2x05]
  • Fixed a problem where inaccessible files and/or folders could be displayed on the client machine even if the server was configured to hide inaccessible files or folders. [#6237] [4.2.2x01]
  • Fixed a problem where the number of open forks listed in the main windows of the Administrator would sometimes not match the number of forks listed in the Administrator's Files window. [#5702] [4.2.2x01]

ExtremeZ-IP File Server ReviewGreat Product for Small to Medium Sized Mac Studios - Version: 4.2, 11/11/2006 02:27PM PST

I regularly deal with Mac Graphic Studios/Corporate Communications Departments that are an island of Mac users in a sea of PC's, generally sharing Server2000/2003 resources and for this type of client, that can't justify the expense of an XServe for 3-15 mac users, this product is great. I sometimes refer to ExtremeZ-IP as the poor man's XServe but that really doesn't do it justice. If you are in an environment that requires your Mac users to share space on a Win2000/2003 server this product is light years ahead of the SFM protocol in both speed and compatibility and their support department really stays on top of issues.

...extremez-ip is simply too expensive, as others pointed out. before osx server bagan to mature (both software and hardware), extremez-ip was an essential service enhancement. it gives you afp version 3.x that supports all the advanced features of osx (auto reconnect, unicode, long filenames, etc.).

tiger server includes extended attributes and access control lists...two things that kept a lot of large companies from moving over to osx server. and as i recently found out, there's also a failover function so you can point one xserver to another and tell it to failover if the first one fails. that opened the door in a lot of large companies.

sorry group logic...you sell an excellent product, but it's way overpriced. oh, and please stop telling people that "in our test osx server fails miserably"...that's such complete nonesense. ;) stick to what you guys do best - selling an excellent product. don't water down your product with unsubstantiated attacks on apple products...seasoned admins, consultants and enterprize engineers know better.

ExtremeZ-IP File Server CommentaryNice product, but the pricetag is to high - Version: 4.2.2, 6/16/2006 03:37PM PST

I used this product for a long time in my last job, and it's nice for sure, but the pricetag is way too high. And if you want some sort of decent support, the TCO-price is absurd. So if you're not rich or have special (MS/Win/ActiveD.-based?) needs, I'll go for a Mac OS X server instead.
The license price itself (for 100 users) can buy you a xserve with nice specs...
You also have to pay for #.X updates, and the upgrade-prices are not nice they either.
Conclusion: Good product, but way too expensive.
