No, VueScan does not automatically check for updates. This is a feature I wish would be included in the next versions of this very usable software. I do not use VueScan very frequently, because it may take weeks between my scanning sessions, just because I scan my films as soon as I am able after having picked them up from the lab.
Great, Reliable and Cheap

I have used VueScan for several years now. I paid one cheap price and get free updates for life. Problems are identified and fixed immediately. This is the one scanner software you need. I use it for images and OCR.

I'm sorry, Ed, after several mails which you answered extremely briefly, I'd like to tell others:
In some cases VueScan is the only Mac - Scansoftware for old or even worse supported scanners. In case you own one of them: VueScan can work perfectly, if you are only asking for normal scans. In my case, since October 2009 I never got a version which:
Keeps the settings reliably and reproducable for the next scan job
Was able to detect negative frames properly (actually, let's say 70% hits, 20% can be adjusted, 10% can wreck your nerves because it keeps on trying to scan outside the frame.
The user interface is just a shame: Sliders are running their own ways up an down, the buttons with the tiny little arrows (maybe for those who want to run the app on a Nokia cellphone or so) jump sometimes two or three digits further.
The dust removal feature is not helpful, just softening the spots. In that time one can do it manually with the repair brush and the result will be better.
The translation (I used it in German first) is just leading to wrong ideas, but the English documentation is helpful and highly recommended. On OS X 10.6.2 it keeps crashing from time to time - all parameters are lost in this case and some of them need time to become used to or to find the right setting.
Well, the bad thing is: The competitors are
not supporting as much scanners as Ed Hamrick is convinced to do (but with big differences in results or usability)
more expensive
even worse "usable"
not better documented
you need really good nerves for this piece of weird code - and don't trust announcements telling you about improvements. There's still a long way to go to use this thing as easy and elegant as "Image Capture" on Snow Leopard
