Product Description:

Textures is a programmable desktop publishing system for Macintosh. An interactive, integrated implementation of the TeX typesetting language, Textures is most commonly used for producing scientific articles and textbooks. Textures is also an extraordinary tool for fine typography, database and catalogue publishing and automated document production.

TeX, the typesetting engine of Textures, is an extremely powerful, versatile, programmable typesetting language created by Stanford University's Donald Knuth. Especially designed to automatically reproduce the quality of fine handset type, TeX is equally at home whether it is typesetting complex math and scientific notation, processing thousands of pages of mailing labels, or producing complex, book-length or even multi-volume works. TeX is a markup language, like HTML, that adds tags to ordinary text to identify parts of the document's structure.

What's new in this version:

  • Up-to-date LaTeX format, including hyphenation patterns for many languages.
  • TeX Log can be searched and saved; the window name indicates the most recent contents.
  • TFM binary metrics are supported; this allows Textures to share TeX Font Metric files with other TeX installations. (Just put an alias into Textures' Metrics folder.) [NB: this facility should be regarded as experimental, as other font metadata necessary to support correct display and printing are not translated. Yet.]

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Textures CommentaryNot going to bother .... - Version: 2.2.0b6, 1/15/2008 02:05AM PST

Back in the “classic OS” days I worked with textures. It was OK (no more than ****), it was expensive - but we didn’t have too many choices. I frequently used my mac as a terminal under neighboring UNIX mainframes to enjoy the wealth of the LaTeX editors. Nowadays, with the wealth of LaTeX options available for macs, some of them actually leaving textures in the dust, I am not going to even bother with the trial version (I do have my old code somewhere).

1) Speed.

2) Features.

People, please read the already posted comments at minimum, and USE THE SOFTWARE (for this or any package) before posting your reactions. The existence of free alternatives should not be a reason for posting critical comments of this or any item of software you have not yet tried. If you are happy with the alternative packages, it would be pleasant and would increase your karma to go to the pages of those products and post positive comments there, rather than knock software you haven't tried.

Yes, other products have grown quite feature-full in the time since Textures has been developing its OS X - native version. As a regular user of all of these products for many years, I have been awaiting the return of Textures as an OS X - native app. I have my license from years before, and if the new one works out to be as good as the Classic version was, I will be happy to pay for the upgrade to get my favorite TeX production tool back.

Thank you for your attention.

Textures Commentary$99 & up... You must be joking! - Version: 2.2.0b4, 12/4/2007 10:45AM PST

Admittedly, in the old days, Textures was the leader. But nowadays, with so many Tex/Latex freewares of excellent quality floating around, why should anyone pay $99 & up... What is the hidden secret? And here comes a second joke. Contrary to the official statement, this version is free only to Texture owners... You download it naively as a Demo, but you are immediately being asked for a serial. In other words, they want us to buy the serial number without actually having a chance to test the application. I may buy it out of curiosity, just to reveal the $99 & up mystery...
