I'm "the Mac Guru" among the people I know, and any time somebody I know buys a Mac, I recommend (still) that they put this little gem on their computer. Why? It's like a can opener -- it'll open any file.
I've had corrupted word processing documents that no other program could open. Try BBEdit Lite, and taa-daa! a little formatting gobbledigook at the top of the file, then the raw text of the "lost" document.
I just can't make the "put it on there and it'll be there when you need it" recommendation with a $50 program (TextWrangler). I think BareBones has tossed one of the best marketing tools it had by discontinuing this.
I'll recommend it until it breaks (I have its non-Lite big brother on my computer :) ). When it breaks we'll have lost a great utility.

Well apparently they've recognized the pure marketing benefit of having a free "lite" product out there, because Text Wrangler just became freeware! Go check it out! :)
BBEdit Lite is still smaller than Text Wrangler (I think), so it's still good for older Macs, but for most of us, I think the trade up is outstanding.
