Product Description:

BBEdit is a high-performance HTML and text editor for the Macintosh. It is designed and crafted for the editing, searching, transformation, and manipulation of text. BBEdit provides an array of general-purpose features which are useful for a wide variety of tasks, and includes many features which have been specifically developed in response to the needs of Web authors and software developers.

What's new in this version:

  • When running on Mac OS X 10.5 or later, you can now scroll background windows with the scroll wheel or trackpad as appropriate.
  • Fixed underlying cause of an occasional crash when bringing up the "Insert Clipping" panel.
  • Fixed occasional crash which could occur when closing an FTP browser window.
  • Fixed double-dispose in Find Definition.
  • Fixed bug in which the selection range was not correctly reset to {0,0} as it should have been if the file was changed behind BBEdit's back.
  • Fixed a bug which could cause a crash when clicking the close widget on the last document in the documents drawer, or dragging the last document out of the documents drawer into another window.
  • Changed the collating order in FTP browser windows so that items whose names begin with a period will float to the top of the list.
  • Increased the default SFTP timeout to 20 seconds (up from 10).
  • Fixed bug in which the date printed was incorrect when printing page headers with the "Date Last Saved" option.
  • Corrected the acceptable types for "Open Files in BBEdit" Automator action and the autoopen variant so that they work correctly on Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5).
  • Fixed a bug where Perforce configurations created while the server was invisible might store a bad client root, resulting in P4 menu items being inappropriately disabled.
  • Fixed bug in which TeX syntax coloring would get out of whack if "Color Math Strings" was turned off and the scanner encountered certain constructs in the document.
  • Made a change to prevent the application from unexpectedly quitting when external forces interfere with the normal operation of the license panel.
  • Fixed bug in which the "Enable" and "Disable" buttons in the Text Encoding prefs were not properly enabled or disabled.
  • Fixed a bug where a drag which contained an NSColor and text would insert both, "duplicating" the color value, e.g. with drags from Color Picker Pro.
  • Applying a Text Factory to a single line selection no longer deletes the rest of the document.
  • Fixed bug in which the JavaScript function scanner could crash on certain malformed (usually because of in-progress edits) constructs.
  • Fixed bug in which SFTP bookmarks without a password would not be remembered across a quit/launch cycle.

BBEdit CommentaryStill the best... - Version: 9.2, 5/8/2009 07:37AM PST

Not sure what ftp issues were present in earlier versions, but I have no problems with working with BBEdit's ftp functions, although I typically use Interarchy for ftp.

When I need to get something done, and done quickly, BBEdit always comes through. I've tried out others, but BBEdit is the strongest and most comprehensive tool I've found.

BBEdit Troubleshooting ReportFTP really sucks! - Version: 9.1, 1/12/2009 04:17AM PST

OK, this is my first NEGATIVE report on BBEdit.
The FTP client is really really buggy!

If you work with a document opened via FTP, every time you save your work BBEdit open a new connection, not closing the ones already it opened.
So it happens that my server, which supports max 50 connections, after a few minutes of work stop accepting my savings.

And there's more and more.

Now reverting to 9.02, which I did not removed from my backups!

Wow -- this is my first negative experience with a BBEdit update in a very long time. They've completely watered down -- oh, make that 'Mac-like' -- the ftp preferences. No longer can I choose what kind of protocol. BBEdit conveniently chooses for me regardless.

And in doing so, they've crippled BBEdit. I can no longer log into webstar servers or other older ftp servers directly. BBEdit appears to log in successfully, but sends erroneous commands and cannot list files or directories.

Support requests to Barebones have gone without reply to date. I'll go back to 9.0.2 to be able to get my work done.

sad.
