redSunset--2008other wise you will not be able to d/l by clicking a button.
took me days to figure that one out.
My firefox just gave me a bland page and no d/l.
removing this file solved the problem.
Not as good as it used to be

epcYou may want to ask Yazsoft directly about the upgrade path. As you mentioned, their support is quite good.
I've used Speed Download since the first version came out, before it became a Yazsoft product. Overall I've been very happy with it, and was happy with my upgrades up to version 4.
I avoided version 5 until I bought it as part of the givegoodfood2yourmac promo. I only bought it since discounts were higher the more programs a person purchased as part of that promo, so buying Speed Download enabled me get a better discount for the applications I wanted, and the price was the same or lower than buying an upgrade.
Regarding version 5 the old Floater is gone, and instead users can minimize the main interface. According to Yazsoft this was "a serious upgrade." I wish they would include the option for users to decide whether to use the old floater or the new minimized Speed Download. The floater had the advantages of being smaller, displaying the number of downloads, and being independent from the main window which was important for people who liked to use both elements of the interface.
Gone are other features as well. For example, the toolbar used to have icons to Hold or Queue the downloads. These commands are no longer available via the toolbar, although they're still present via a contextual menu. In practical terms, it means wasting more time to invoke those commands. Instead of using one click to achieve a goal, users now have to click twice. First to access the contextual menu (and wait for the menu to appear), and then to select an action.
Version 5.1 crashed constantly. Yesterday 5.1.1 became available and the release notes indicate that it is "Optimized for Mac OS X 10.5.6" so hopefully that will eliminate the crashes.
Up to version 4 I would rate the program with 5 stars. I may actually go back to using it instead of version 5, which deserves only 3 stars.

freevitoI'm pleased with YazSoft in general. SpeedDownload is a terrific application, YazSoft's support is excellent, and they work hard at keeping SpeedDownload up to date, relevant, and full of useful features. And the software just works! I still have my license for the original version of SpeedDownload, so I'm running it on my MacBook Pro...and it still works fine.
In fact, I would have upgraded to SD 4 if I had been able to use it on all my machines, but YazSoft's licensing policy doesn't allow that. Most hip developers recognize that a single user has a legitimate need to install an app on more than one machine—usually two, at least...a desktop and a notebook computer—and their licensing policy reflects that real-world condition. Not so with SpeedDownload. Drat! It's especially irritating because I'm a real stickler for adhering to licensing terms. I could work around the per-machine restriction, but I won't. The license terms are what they are. I don't like them, but I agreed to honor them, and that's that.
So, I guess my only complaints are these:
- Current upgrade policy doesn't provide any consideration to licensees who owned a version earlier than SD4.
- The license is per machine, not per user.

2."under the hood changes to prepare for 'next generation of OSX'" -whatever that means
3."several tweaks and fixes" -details! anyway, that would be covered by item #1-
actually all 3 could be listed as ONE improvement-if they are in fact, improvements at all
So.....might as well add:
4 "neglected to put a comma in the word 'that's' in documentation-fixed"
5. Nothing in particular, actually, just wanted to bump SD back to the top of VT for more cash
there are too many honest developers that might go six months or a year before submitting a new version of an app to VT-because of a genuine verifiable improvement-otherwise why not just write
Whats new in this version?
Nothing. just wanted to let you know were still alive......
X-Plane does this all the time-but they have some very legit specific documented changes and fixes
"tweaked and turbocharged" shouldnt cut it for potential buyers/upgraders
a quick trip to the YS site revealed no details I could see-in fact-not even the "generic" ones listed above
and 2 of the above are already listed in the "whats new" in 5.1.4
and ya gotta love a company that makes YOU do the work to avoid the buying of added products
that strikes me as dishonest-no matter how observant you need to be
'Read carefully-or we will charge you for extra stuff-and NO REFUNDS!'
This of course is designed knowing that there exists a constant fixed subset of people who pay little or no attention while ordering and are easily snared-or may be confused and will click BUY (all)
just a little more cash in the coffers
YOU should be the one to knowingly and actively choose/opt in to add products to an order
