Looks like they fixed the issue with iChat. Works great. You do not have to set up ports or open ports like on other hardware routers. Nice update!

This version fixes a number of nagging bugs and allowed me to move form the OS9 version to OSX permanently. They fixed a problem with wireless access points not getting IP addresses and the latest version fixes a DHCP assignment issue. The OSX version is much more stable than the OS9 version - I've never had a InterGate crash in OSX. InterGate uses the SurfControl database to identify objectionable sites and has categories that you can select for content filtering. Unlike hardware routers, you can configure InterGate to allow some users to bypass the content filter (Mom & Dad), while others are banned from undesirable sites. You can also manually bypass certain sites if they are on the banned list. No hardware router does this. Support is excellent! My only issue is that Personal File Sharing seems gets turned off upon re-boot and the server does not reliably show up in the Network. However, disks always mount if you put them in your login items and you can always connect to the server by using it's IP address.
Softrouters are still VERY valuable - Version: 8.5.4, 1/22/2004 06:30PM PST

If you want a way to control content from a central location using a dynamic database that parents can bypass at will, this is the only option I have found that is easy to manage. Client machine filters are easy to bypass and need to be updated individually. This is an excellent central solution.
softwarerouters are useless in these days - Version: 8.5.3, 11/18/2003 10:59PM PST

I used Vicomsoft Gateway (now Intergate) for years. But in these days hardware router are very cheap, customizable and small and do not consume that energy of an old Mac just sitting around to share the net-connection. And what made me finally switch, sharing the net-connection via software is much slower than sharing via hardware.
Great product!

I have used InterGate since version 3 and have found it invaluable in our network strategy. It provides one interface to manage everyone's connection to the Internet, firewall settings, routing outside users to our web site, VNC connection to one server and Timbuktu to another. The filtering software has saved us many an HR headache by restricting access to undesirable web sites. Vicomsoft's technical support is among the best I've ever dealt with in my eleven years as an IT professional. Version 8.5 seems to be working very well on my new Xserve. Version 8 had some issues with OS X Server 10.2 but these seem to have been fixed in this version. I enthusiastically recommend this software and its developer.

broadband software routing with all kinds of robust extensible add-on solutions Internet Gateway is the best solution for Mac OS 9 - and a very, very compelling product for Mac OS X as well.
