Symantec NAV/SAV virus def CommentaryWhat's up with the constant updates? - Version: July 2, 7/2/2009 07:45PM PST

gneutra
Am I missing something? Symantec seems to be updating their virus definition files every day. And this is for the Mac OS that isn't as susceptible to viruses. Could someone please explain the need for these daily updates?

This firmly attaches in endless locations on your hard drive, running in your background and slowing down and hampering al of your useful running processes. To remove it completely is actually easiest by WIPING your HD and starting from scratch . . . . and they call this ANTI-virus? LOL

3 def updates in 3 days, must be an attack from China, North Korea, or Dick Anthrax Chaney.

Thanks for keeping up with it. You guys really did a great job bringing about a solid, non-bogging anti-virus app for the mac.

How about bringing back Norton utilities. I miss that with it's awesome defrag. I bought iDefrag, but I don't trust it.

Symantec NAV/SAV virus def CommentaryLiveUpdate servers updated - Version: Sep 25, 9/26/2008 03:41PM PST

michael_romo
hi-

It's Friday, September 26th--we had some users complaining that they were having problems updating. This issue has been fixed as of 3:40pm.

Here's my original reply to a post about this issue:

Mike Romo here again. So, the LiveUpdate servers have been checked and things should be working again. Here's the deal--when we post our signature files, they are sent to Akamai servers all around the world.

Sometimes replication of the definitions introduces errors in content. LiveUpdate is unable to do anything about it except notify, and because of the digital signing technology within our products we are able to recognize altered content, and LiveUpdate can report the error. The content has to be reposted on the servers from a trusted site. Once the reposted content propagates to users, they should be able to LiveUpdate their definitions without errors.

We have reset the definitions a clean install and everything looks like its running smoothly. The servers that replicate our content experienced large spikes in downloads today which possibly caused them not to get updated with our current definitions. We’re re-pushing all of the data out now to correct the issue. Should be fixed by the time I've done typing this message (3:37PM PST).

Anyway, I know this is an aggravation and I apologize for the irritation this might have caused you. We strive to offer the best service possible and sometimes we have technical issues.

But thanks for your patience, let me know if you have any questions.

have a good weekend
mike romo

Symantec NAV/SAV virus def CommentaryWhat the... - Version: Sep 8, 9/9/2008 12:13PM PST

I see that the Intelligent Updater web page shows that this page has been updated to September 8, 2008:
http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/index.jsp
But the AntiVirus for Mac still shows September 5, 2008:
http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=nmc
Also LiveUpdate doesn't show any updates since September 5, 2008.

I noticed Symantec has recently release bad definitions and now incorrect date information on their website. Symantec has and is loosing touch with their original core values and it is scaring me with the release of bad virus definitions and incorrect website information.

Symantec NAV/SAV virus def ReviewPeople are still using this....'pointlessware'?! - Version: Aug 8, 8/15/2008 03:52PM PST

In the past 15 years, I dont I think ive heard of 2 ANYTHINGS out in the wild for Macs to really worry about-a few proof-of-concept-(ie: THEORETICAL) which are patched even as someone in the next room is building it for test purposes...
It costs money, is ablsolutely useless-thought Symantec will create 'Terrorist' Alert scare every so often to drum up patriotism-er...SALES

This really weighs down your computer and causes problems.
I got rid of mine 10 years ago-and not a molocule of a virus trojan bug etc
or problems of any sort.

Symantec NAV/SAV virus def CommentaryI still use it! - Version: Jun 26, 6/26/2008 08:25PM PST

1) No other comments since back in January! Is anyone else still using this?

2) I still use it to scan stuff to purge it of PC viruses, just to be sure I'm a good corporate citizen and don't pass any nasties on to others. In that sense, it's fairly useful for a Mac user.
