CommuniGate Pro ReviewGreat email server, and great support - Version: 5.0.1, 12/5/2007 03:41PM PST

I've been using Communigate for several years (Mac OS 9 through 10.4) and it has been one of the most solid performers in our business. I have found customer support to be very responsive and most importantly, COMPETENT when it comes to solving problems. As a result, Communigate allowed us to manage our email without programmer-level (or even sysop level) IT staff.

To those who complain about the price, I'm sorry you don't see the value. I see nothing but value, and one less thing to worry about for our business.

The current stable version of CGP is 5.1.7, not 5.1.8. Not sure why VT (and MacUpdate) are announcing an update that doesn't exist yet. Is this a psychic update? http://www.communigate.com/CommuniGatePro/History51.html

CommuniGate Pro CommentaryIt's free for five accounts or less - Version: 5.1.8, 3/29/2007 07:31PM PST

I bought CommuniGate Pro many years ago and kept updating through 4.X as long as the upgrades were free. I dropped out when the licensing terms changed radically, and ran 4.X without problem for quite a while. This is really very nice software for managing a lot of things easily.

Now, however, it turns out that CommuniGate is FREE for users with five accounts or less, so I'm going back to upgrade.

Try it, you'll like it, as long as you're a small enough operation to fly under the 5 account limit,

Just tell'em you don't need the MAPI connector and you want the ISP version. You'll pay a lot less. For my upgrade, I paid FAR less than what I paid at purchase.

CommuniGate Pro CommentaryUnethical Business Practices -- BEWARE - Version: 4.3.1, 5/14/2005 06:37PM PST

Absolutely unethical to expire rightly owned serial numbers, especially without warning. This meathod to generate sales has greatly hurt the number of owners of CGP. Upgrades cost more than original purchases. Switched to an open source assortment of programs that act more reliably -- much thanks to stalker.

Used to be the best but now over-priced and includes a time bomb. I just helped installaing a 100,000 exchange server. Why? Communigate was 10 times more expensive!

This used to be my favourite mail server and I still maintain about 6 installations. All will be replaced in due course. Shame.

Final thought - handle with care or better still - use something else.

I'm afraid I can't agree with audiokid's argument. Their MAPI component is something that a lot of current customers don't need. It's just as easy to release a version without this piece for those that don't need it. It's not as though this is just some sort of disposable application from which an organization can switch because the pricing scheme is no longer agreeable. Server technologies, mail servers in particular, require a good deal of commitment from those who will be implementing them. It will be quite costly for me to switch our company away from Stalker becuase they now choose to include everything but the kitchen sink in their price tag. Don't think that Stalker is ignorant of this fact. It's borderline bait-and-switch.

So while I can appreciate audiokid's need for MAPI and consequent satisfaction with Communigate's new price, that's not what I bargained for nor did the others who have _rightfully_ voiced their concerns.

You know people, you really need to grow up. Yes Stalker raised the pricing, but they also build in the MAPI module, and until you go price Exchange, then realize the software nigthmare you have to deal with, shut your mouths about cost. The Mac community needs to stop whining at companies who want to make money, when they also build a fantastic product that fully supports the Mac. Stalker has every right to charge more for their product, if it is more capable than the previous version. If you like something different or don't need all the capabilities of CGPro, you are welcome to use something else. Sitting here and bashing on Stalker for *earning* the money they charge, is juvenile and destructive. That said, my clients who currently use it, love it, and all say it's the most reliable piece of their electronic world. You can't overcharge for that.

I am currently trying to find out at what point my licence will expire.

There is no real information on their website, which explains this.

CommuniGatePro is a great product, but now they are pricing themselves out of the market.

I am having to seriously consider migrating to a different solution, unless Stalker come out with a pricing structure that we can accept.

At least we have Mac OS X Server to fall back on, if it turns out that we have to come up with an interim solution. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than being fleeced.
