Product Description:
SilverFast is high-end scan and imaging software from LaserSoft Imaging. By now standard for Desktop-Scanners and available for over 300 scanners for most OS. SilverFast combines an intuitive user interface with highest professionality. Beginners and professionals will appreciate the intelligent automatic functions as well as the possibility to manually adjust the image at any point. The professional user can adjust any operation via numerical input and can precisely monitor the results using a densitometer. The ScanPilot helps the novice user step by step to a brilliant image.

This is the most important tool regarding quality for scanners
- AACO - Auto Adaptive Contrast Optimisation An excellent tool for the correction of dark, high-contrast areas of an image while preserving the details in the highlights. It operates automatically when selected but can also be manually adjusted. The intensity and the complexity of the shadows, which are to be lightened, can be adjusted without affecting the highlights of the image.
- Extended print dialog with copy function
- This new function offers the possibility of printing images or image parts selected in the preview. The selection can be scaled, rotated or positioned manually on the print sheet. Also a 1:1 print-out, similar to a photocopy, is possible. The position of the images on the print sheet is pre-set by the position on the scan screen, but can also be manually adjusted by the user.
- Picture Setting Dialog This dialog displays a real-time output histogram that shows the effects of all SilverFast Ai Studio settings on the final scan.
- Clone Tool A powerful 16-bit Clone Tool which extends the previously implemented SRD function has now been developed. Major defects and severe scratches on the image may easily be removed or corrected. Entire areas of the image may be removed, retouched and altered. SilverFast Ai Studio may now be used for complex catalog production - without the need for additional imaging programs or tools
- Unsharp mask PLUS The USM dialog and its preview windows may now be freely resized and enlarged by click-dragging the lower right corner of the window. Now a better control of the image is achieved before scanning which allows a much larger preview of the final sharpening effects
- JPEG 2000 support The support of the JPEG 2000 format enables SilverFast's strongest compression to process such data up to 7 times faster than any other imaging software. In combination with SilverFast 's HiRePP function even 3GB files may be compressed and re-opened very quickly.

Once again, an "update" of one of the most bug-ridden pieces of software on my 3 gig, Leopard-loaded Mac Pro, just got more buggy. I'm scanning with a Nikon CoolScan 5000. Downloaded and installed the 6.5.6r4 update today in hopes the good developers at LaserSoft Imaging, who seemingly produce Mac versions of SilverFast products as an afterthought, fixed the bugs in version 6.5.5r3. Nope, version 6.5.5r4 doesn't just hang itself up, it will hang up your entire Mac Leopard System requiring a forced restart of the computer. If you trash the LaserSoft preferences frequently—like each day you use the program—it seems slightly more stable, but that doesn't seem like it should be a necessary step for using an expensive software package. DEVELOPERS -- PLEASE FIX THIS SOFTWARE AND TEST IT BEFORE RELEASE. I'm a full price paying customer not a beta tester!

Even though they say it works with Leopard, their download page only shows 10.4 Tiger as a download type. I don't know if this is a mistake or a way to say, 'it's not my fault' if it screws up my Mac!
Apart from supporting the 35mm scanners Coolscan IV and V ED, Super Coolscan 2000, 4000 ED and 5000 ED, now also the medium format scanners LS-8000 and LS-9000 are fully supported unter Mac OS X 10.5 - IntelMacs included - with SilverFast 6.6.0r1a.
Nikon Filmscanner are now addressed directly without any detour through the MAID-module.
