Seiko Smart Label Printers CommentaryFurther feedback - Version: 1.7, 3/11/2008 01:26AM PST

Although I did receive an indication from the development team that the suggestions that I made in my last post (below) would be incorporated in the next version, sadly they did not appear.

I have also recently discovered a couple more points that need attention relating to the Ruler. Firstly I cannot see how to change the ruler to use metric measurements rather than imperial (inches), and secondly the ruler has a habit of suddenly disappearing and then it is very random about coming back, despite the option still being ticked (and greyed out) in the Text menu. Fix please!

Seiko Smart Label Printers ReviewClean and stable but not perfect - Version: 1.6, 5/1/2007 02:38AM PST

The printers are fine, and the software is perfectly adequate. If you are thinking of getting a label printer (and they certainly are very convenient), I have no problem in recommending the Seiko products. The software is pretty much as good as any other software for label printers, such as the Dymo software. It has all the basics plus the ability to incorporate images, barcodes (ten different symbologies built in, and supporting serial numbers, text and many different ways of laying out the label) and pretty sophisticated mail merge.

A few slight annoyances. These come from the position that I want this software to be as quick and simple to use as possible, so they are frustrations that hinder quick and easy use for me:

Firstly, there is no way to switch off the prompt to save a label when you exit the application, or whenever you switch to a saved label. This would be trivial to implement and I personally find it annoying as 90% of the time I don't want to save a new label I have created. If I do want to save a label I can do that myself and if I forget then it's not really a big deal. But the hassle of having this prompt on every occasion is frustrating.

Secondly, why no option to paste text from the clipboard without its formatting, ie picking up the formatting that I have in my default label? It means that every time I paste an address I have to select all the text, go into the font dialog and choose the correct font and size. This is just a no-brainer of a feature and should be implemented as a menu option for "Paste without formatting" (or similar wording) and a preferences option to always do this if the user chooses.

Thirdly, and this is a minot thing, every time you go to print a small dialog comes up which has to be accepted. It would be great to have a preference to just print without any intermediate dialog if the user prefers it that way.

Well, Seiko is getting there, although OSX has been out for how many years now?

Unfortunately, this driver does not support their SLP2000 printer of the same era. Probably because it is serial and not USB.

Oh well. Continue using the old SLP application with a KeySpan serial adapter under OS9. The old SLP app is the the only program that gives me a reason to launch OS9!

I know, why not just get some new USB Seiko printers? Because I have 12 of these puppies, and they're all in great shape.
