Ultralingua Grammatica English CommentaryGood Try, But Still Stupid - Version: 7.0, 1/11/2009 07:12PM PST

epresley
It flagged 'jacket', a noun in that sentence, as a verb and wanted me to make it agree with the noun.

It is dog slow.

It makes changes that you can't see until you go back and look at your original text. Has a really hard time with a selection if you make changes on the fly as the checker checks.

You can't 'go back' or 'undo'.

You can't edit right into the text field without the beach ball of death spinning into a crash.

Doesn't play well with latest mac:Word.

It flagged enough stuff that I wanted it to that I was very disappointed with its bugs, its slowness and the fact that it flagged words like 'The' at the beginning of a sentence and wanted me to make it agree with other parts of the sentence.

Ultralingua Grammatica English Reviewbad in spanish - Version: 7.0, 6/11/2007 03:30AM PST

Expert Decisions
It performs very bad in Spanish rendering it useless.

For instance in this sentence:

"Como recuerdas hay dos administradores, uno que es Pepe y otro que es Luis"
(As you remember there are two administrators, one of them is called John and the other one is called Peter)

It says there is a plural conflict between "dos" and "uno" (two and one) what is false.

Aside from the fact that some of the comments don't even pertain to the new version, I think some of you need to be a little more realistic about what you can expect from electronic grammar checkers. I've been using three modules -- English and French since version 5, and now the German one. While the English checker doesn't find everything, I find it at least as good as MS Word's checker, and it can be used in all other apps. (By the way, out of curiosity I ran fsvwbug's sentence through Word's checker, which also didn't find any errors...). In French, Grammatica is far superior to Word. My knowledge of German isn't as good, but the app seems to find plenty of the errors I make. For Schmiegel, who complained that it doesn't locate duplicate words, maybe he should try checking the preference for that ;-)

So, no, it's not perfect, but it's the best checker I've come across.

Sorry Ultralingua. Tested the German module and it doesn't work at all. It doesn't even find duplicate words. I hope no one trusts this with his significant correspondence. One star for the well done interface and integration.

Ultralingua Grammatica English ReviewLimited use ... - Version: 6.0, 12/14/2004 05:08PM PST

I used Grammatica to review the writing of a student whose native language is not English. Unfortunately, the program did not perform well.

Over six pages of the student's work, the program missed many many errors, and it missed many problems of basic structure. It found no issues with the following passage:

"Since sixteenth century, not only by the Catholics, who kept old authority, but also by the Protestants, who encouraged new authority, persecuted and sometimes executed the Anabaptist. The shaping of the Lutheran or Swiss Protestant churches with the support of state and lords brought some followers the sense of the betrayal that compromised the spiritual reform with the secular power."

The one passage it flagged as an error -- an agreement fault -- was, in fact, correct.

Yet another piece of software that cannot deliver what it claims. It cannot find the simplest of errors. On more complex phrases it gets confused. Consider this faulty phrase: "actually: I does not like fishes. I prefer, to eating beef". The checker
acknowleges that "does" is used in error, but that is all.
Maybe the French version is better, although it could not identify faults with my basic, poorly composed ramblings!!
The demo version has no cut copy paste. It cannot check documents within other programs. It would be better to have a fully working trial period (say 21 days) so these functions can be verified.
The company website explains how grammar checkers work, and make reference to how difficult they are to program. Well, if you can't do it let someone else try!
There are grammatical mistakes in the text of their website which does not create a good impression. BCDL should increase the price of the software and release something that actually works properly. They could easily corner the market as the limited competition is pretty bad.
Anther gross disapointment......
