Product Description:

ImageJ is a public domain Java image processing program inspired by NIH Image for the Macintosh. It runs, either as an online applet or as a downloadable application, on any computer with a Java 1.1 or later virtual machine. It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and "raw". It supports "stacks", a series of images that share a single window. It is multithreaded, so time-consuming operations such as image file reading can be performed in parallel with other operations. It can calculate area and pixel value statistics of user-defined selections. It can measure distances and angles. It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering. It does geometric transformations such as scaling, rotation and flips. Image can be zoomed up to 32:1 and down to 1:32. All analysis and processing functions are available at any magnification factor. The program supports any number of windows (images) simultaneously, limited only by available memory. Spatial calibration is available to provide real world dimensional measurements in units such as millimeters. Density or gray scale calibration is also available.

What's new in this version:

Added the Plugins>Utilities>Capture Image command.
Added a "Show 'Debug' Window" option to macro error messages.
Added a "*Custom*" (user-defined) fit option to Analyze>Tools>CurveFitting.
Reported UnsupportedClassVersion exceptions include the line "This plugin requires Java 1.x or later."
The LUT Editor (Image>Color>Edit LUT) displays the ending index in the status bar as the user drags to select a range.
LUT Editor color pickers no longer move the green and blue sliders when the red slider is moved.
The Fit.doFit() macro function will now fit a user-defined formula to a set of data points (examples).
Added the Fit.showDialog and Fit.logResults macro functions.
ImageJ no longer throws an exception when opening DICOMs with UT (unlimited text) tags.
Fixed a bug on Windows, introduced in v1.42e, that made it impossible to enter some characters accessed using AltGr key (e.g., "{") into macro editor windows.
Fixed a bug in the particle analyzer that caused it to sometimes not correctly add particles to the ROI Manager.
Fixed a bug in the saveAs() macro function that sometimes caused it to fail if the path contained a period and the file name did not have an extension.
Luke Miller has written a tutorial on how to quantify western blots using ImageJ.

64 bit no longer works after Java update - Version: 1.43a, 6/19/2009 04:35PM PST

After the latest Java update from Apple (JavaForMacOSX10.5Update4), the 64 bit version of ImageJ no longer starts. Double click on the icon, and you get nothing. The 32 bit version works ok.

We have been using it for years at my University. Keeping in mind the price, and the collaborative method used to develop it, I think it is an awesome product. It is very versatile, and we use if for electron microscopy, astronomical images, and everything in between. It is mostly designed for medical/biology uses though.

Hideously designed and extremely painful to use. Plugins are poorly documented too. How do I know that algorithms in them are implemented correctly and their calculations are reliable? There is no any documentation to prove that.
