Product Description:

MPlayer OSX Extended is an unofficial extension of the MPlayer OSX user interface.

Development on the official MPlayer OSX frontend has been slow in recent years and MPlayer OSX Extended tries to change that. The project is focused on a steady pace and aimed at making MPlayer OSX what it ought to be: A simple but powerful video player.

MPlayer OSX Extended is not aimed at long release cycles and maintaining stable branches. To keep development simple and to focus on bringing the project forward, there's only one branch and no release numbers. Just ongoing revisions, of which each should be better than the one before.

Additions to the original project include:
  • Fullscreen controls
  • More video filter options (Postprocessing, Deinterlace etc)
  • Support for styled ASS subtitles
  • Audio and video equalizers (not yet interactive)
  • Taking Screenshots
  • Stream selection
  • Automatic updates
  • Up-to-date compiled versions of MPlayer
  • Many interface improvements
  • Many bug fixes

What's new in this version:

  • Highlights
    • Compatible with OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    • GUI and MPlayer are now 64bit compatible (~20-50% faster)
  • Changes
    • Chapter support no longer limited to MKV
    • Refine the behavior of the Apple Remote's combined skip/seek buttons
  • Bugfixes
    • Fix two Snow Leopard issues
    • Fix additional parameters being ignored in some cases (especially -vf-add/-af-add)
    • Fix loading of subtitles with an apostrophe in their path
    • Fix player window from appearing in fullscreen when using on top while playing
    • Don't set the -monitoraspect MPlayer option (use Additional Parameters if needed)
    • Fix fullscreen controls disappearing when being dragged
  • New MPlayer and MPlayer-MT build from 18. October 2009 (r29777)

MPlayer OSX Extended ReviewKicks VLC in the nuts! - Version: rev12, 10/31/2009 04:55PM PST

Obee Juan
I've long been using VLC for its incredible support for a wide variety of types of video formats, but today I decided to give MPlayer Extended a whirl after getting frustrated over how VLC was taking an unusually long time to exit after having a large video loaded. I've also long been a bit disappointed that with many larger videos, VLC has trouble skipping ahead a significant portion into the playback. It is often very choppy when doing so for a few seconds before smoothing out and playing normally, though at times it has outright crashed.

In these respects, MPlayer absolutely shines for me. No stuttering when skipping ahead, and it opens/closes very smoothly. MPlayer has supported everything I've thrown at it with ease... mkv, m4v (with AC3 audio no less), mov, and more, and it doesn't even break a sweat with 720p. It does seem to be a bit lacking in some advanced options available in VLC, but that doesn't bother me in the least. It plays what I have and exceptionally smoothly with no hassles. I do believe this will not only be replacing VLC for me, but Quicktime as well.

MPlayer OSX Extended CommentaryWhat's with the Font Cache rebuilding? - Version: rev10, 7/21/2009 02:12AM PST

This product would be PERFECT if it weren't for the 20 second font cache rebuild every other time you use it.

Also, some newer WMV encodings (H264?) seem to stutter badly.

I hope both of these issues are seen to shortly. I am currently using VLC 1.0.0, and it has played every format I have without a hitch or hiccup. Both of these programs are highly recommended for your video playback arsenal!

MPlayer OSX Extended ReviewWorked very well as soon as installation finished - Version: rev10, 4/20/2009 04:24PM PST

I had already downloaded another program. It did not work at all. Then I opened my emaill from version Tracker and Voila! There this was: Mplayer OSX Extended for Mac OS X. I just bought this brand new Mac Book at the Apple Store. A friend sent me 2 wmv's to watch. Nothing on my Mac Book could play the videos, which happen to also be on Youtube. So, I did go there. But not being satisfied with not being able to view the downloads on my mac, I continued my search on the email and found this wonderful program. Abundant Gratitude to all involved in getting this to me thru Version Tracker.

Gratefully Yours, with Joy, Peace and
LOVE,
