MPlayer OSX Extended ReviewKicks VLC in the nuts! - Version: rev12, 10/31/2009 04:55PM PST

Obee Juan
I've long been using VLC for its incredible support for a wide variety of types of video formats, but today I decided to give MPlayer Extended a whirl after getting frustrated over how VLC was taking an unusually long time to exit after having a large video loaded. I've also long been a bit disappointed that with many larger videos, VLC has trouble skipping ahead a significant portion into the playback. It is often very choppy when doing so for a few seconds before smoothing out and playing normally, though at times it has outright crashed.

In these respects, MPlayer absolutely shines for me. No stuttering when skipping ahead, and it opens/closes very smoothly. MPlayer has supported everything I've thrown at it with ease... mkv, m4v (with AC3 audio no less), mov, and more, and it doesn't even break a sweat with 720p. It does seem to be a bit lacking in some advanced options available in VLC, but that doesn't bother me in the least. It plays what I have and exceptionally smoothly with no hassles. I do believe this will not only be replacing VLC for me, but Quicktime as well.

MPlayer OSX Extended CommentaryWhat's with the Font Cache rebuilding? - Version: rev10, 7/21/2009 02:12AM PST

This product would be PERFECT if it weren't for the 20 second font cache rebuild every other time you use it.

Also, some newer WMV encodings (H264?) seem to stutter badly.

I hope both of these issues are seen to shortly. I am currently using VLC 1.0.0, and it has played every format I have without a hitch or hiccup. Both of these programs are highly recommended for your video playback arsenal!

MPlayer OSX Extended ReviewWorked very well as soon as installation finished - Version: rev10, 4/20/2009 04:24PM PST

I had already downloaded another program. It did not work at all. Then I opened my emaill from version Tracker and Voila! There this was: Mplayer OSX Extended for Mac OS X. I just bought this brand new Mac Book at the Apple Store. A friend sent me 2 wmv's to watch. Nothing on my Mac Book could play the videos, which happen to also be on Youtube. So, I did go there. But not being satisfied with not being able to view the downloads on my mac, I continued my search on the email and found this wonderful program. Abundant Gratitude to all involved in getting this to me thru Version Tracker.

Gratefully Yours, with Joy, Peace and
LOVE,

MPlayer OSX Extended CommentaryMPlayer confusion explained... - Version: rev8, 2/9/2009 09:42AM PST

There is a certain eccentricity regarding MPlayer. There are essentially three separate development tracks:

1) The Version 1 track is the original and is actively run by the developers who write ffmpeg, officially maintained by Nicolas Plourde. They actively maintain the CLI version but also have an active GUI version. Version 1 has been updated into a Universal Binary. The most recent version is v1.0rc2, released in January 2009. You can access the developer site via:

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

2) The Version 2 track is currently at a dead end, kept over at SourceForge, as indicated by the URL I posted above. On their website the last version is listed as v2.0b8r5. But when you actually run it, you'll find in the About Box tht what you have is v2.0b95. (>_<) Version 2 stopped development in 2005. It was never updated beyond PPC compatibility. Therefore, it runs in Rosetta on Intel Macs and is IMHO antiquated.

3) Recently a third sub-branch began, called MPlayer OSX Extended, developed by Adrian Stutz. It is a GUI embellishment built upon the Version 1 track. It is 'unofficial' but offers some well acclaimed ease of use improvements. This is the version people currently prefer. It is actively updated and keeps up with the most recent edition of the Version 1 track. The most recent version is 'rev8'. It is Universal Binary.

Summary: Version 1 is the older, original development track, but it is also the only active branch. Version 2 started later, but is currently a dead project. I personally recommend going for MPlayer OSX Extended.

What I do: I have one folder for all three. Inside it I have separate folders for v1, v2 and Extended. I have all three in my Dock. But the one I use most is Extended.

MPlayer OSX Extended CommentaryNot the greatest thing since sliced bread - Version: rev8, 2/1/2009 06:27AM PST

I can't say that I understand the rave reviews here. MPlayer does some things better than VLC, but overall, it's nowhere near as capable. I threw a couple of AVIs that befuddled VLC and Quicktime Player (with Perian) at MPlayer. It managed to play them, although the first time I dropped one of those videos onto MPlayer's dock icon, the app immediately locked up and I needed to force quit. That's great. But compared to VLC, MPlayer lacks a lot of features and is also un-Maclike in many ways. For one thing, there's no "Open recent..." submenu like most Mac apps have. Finish playing a video and it disappears from the playlist, so if you want to play it again, you have to go find it again. There's no control over audio sync, so if your audio doesn't match perfectly, you're out of luck. Go through the menus for a little too long (about 15 seconds) and the playback freezes. And there is no quick jumping through the video. With VLC, I can make short, medium, long and extra long jumps through video at the press of a key combination (actually at the press of a key on my wonderfully programmable Belkin Nostromo N52 Speedpad). That's very useful if I'm searching for a specific point in a video or I miss a line of dialog and want to jump back. Press a key and I've jumped back 10 seconds. Press another and I can jump 5 minutes forward instantly. No such luck with MPlayer. It has barely more controls than Quicktime Player. I use VLC's extremely configurable prefs to set the audio volume to very fine grain control, another option not available in MPlayer.

MPlayer is a useful addition to my video arsenal for files that won't play back any other way. But use it as my primary player? No, thanks. MPlayer is more of a basic tool, while VLC is a power tool.

MPlayer OSX Extended Reviewhallelujah! - Version: rev8, 1/10/2009 11:20AM PST

I have had trouble with mplayer and h264 for several versions and this seems to have solved it. I had preferred this to vlc but couldn't use it for a lot of my files. This reestablishes mplayer as my preferred media player again.

This player now has a great looking OSX GUI and I agree with a previous poster, it seems to handle files more smoothly than VLC. I will keep using it over VLC for a while.

MPlayer OSX Extended ReviewVery Nice and with a Mac feel - Version: rev8, 1/9/2009 02:00PM PST

While it's always been nice to have VLC around, it's always felt like a port. And MPlayer has been a nice program for the Mac, but it's not under very consistent development, I'd have to say.

This version, though not 'official', has a great feel and plays everything I've thrown at it thus far. The scrubbing through the progress bar is smoother and more accurate than I've gotten from VLC and I appreciate the aesthetic touches added.

Thanks a LOT.
