Apple HP Printer Driver Troubleshooting ReportDriver installation fails with "System extension cannot be used" - Version: 2.2, 10/2/2009 09:40AM PST

ri-cook
The new set of drivers (which are pushed by Apple's Software Update package to Snow Leopard systems) fails to register correctly.

The installer hangs and generates an error message:

System extension cannot be used

The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/hpPlugInInit.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

According to Apple support, this is a problem with the HP driver installation routine and not a Snow Leopard problem. They refer the caller to HP support.

Things that DO NOT work to correct the problem: downloading the drivers directly from Apple site, booting from the Snow Leopard installation disk, fixing disk permissions, repairing the main disk, deleting and reloading the drivers.

I have been unable to contact HP support about the problem; the HP website has no means for submitting a trouble report with driver installation.

Apple HP Printer Driver ReviewBreaks scanner on AIO products - Version: 2.2, 11/29/2008 09:28AM PST

I'm using an HP Protoxpart C6180, and after installing this upgrade, the scanner function does no longer work. I reverted to HP_Installer_PSC6100_v9.7.1 from HP and works as expected

Apple HP Printer Driver Usage TipFear the 'update'.. - Version: 2.2, 10/5/2008 11:45AM PST

I always fear the HP Printer Driver updates.

I've got a Color LaserJet 3600 which was touted as 'Mac Compatible' and yet isn't fully.

The driver on my Leopard system works sometimes. It will print fine, and then stop working and then work again and then disappear and need to be reinstalled and then maybe work for a while before it screws up yet again.

I have a scanjet 4670 scanner that doesn't work with Leopard either. Damn nice scanner and yet because HP won''t either release a Leopard driver or release the driver code so someone can do a driver, I can't use it. And dammit, there are only HP scanners locally for purchase.

How much longer will they work with Leopard? Will they stop working with the next version (10.6)? Will they stop working with the next point upgrade of Leopard?

I have no faith in HP products, and I sell them! Heck, the scanjet 4670 won't work with Vista either!

These damn bastard companies that push product by denying drivers sure do blow...

Someone should sue them to free the driver code...

I fear the updates. I fear HP drivers on the PC too. What happened to HP?
