Product Description:

ShareTool is hands down, the fastest, easiest, and most secure way to access all of your Bonjour services from anywhere in the world. No server or technical skills required. Also works with VPN connections. For anyone that's been itching to get Bonjour working over VPN, ShareTool is for you! Why should I care? Scenario: You've just purchased a brand new iMac and MacBook and are simply loving it. You've set up your home or office network exactly the way you want it. You have file sharing between the two machines and can transfer your documents easily between them; you can listen to your iMac's iTunes Library from the MacBook and view your MacBook's iPhoto Library from your iMac. Everything on your network works exactly as you want it to and life is beautiful. What happens when you have to leave (i.e. work or travel) the comfort of your new custom configured network? Wouldn't it be nice to know that with one mouse click you will be able to access almost everything you've just setup from anywhere in the world securely? Before ShareTool, this was simply not possible without an extremely (if at all possible) complicated setup even for those in the know. Not anymore! With ShareTool, that complex procedure is reduced to a simple mouse click and as a result, yes, you can be at two places at the same time! ShareTool lets you access all of the Bonjour services on your home network from anywhere in the world. This includes iTunes Music Sharing, Screen Sharing, File Sharing, printing, and more. With ShareTool, you can listen to your entire iTunes music library at work, control the screen of any of your home computers, or grab that important file you forgot to bring with you. And this is simply the tip of the iceberg. With ShareTool, it's as if you've never left your own network. It's Back to my Mac -- on steroids. Some Key New Features in ShareTool: * Simple Setup: ShareTool automatically configures routers supporting NAT-PMP or UPnP * Easy Access: Remote services automatically appear in Finder, iTunes, and other applications * Compatibility: ShareTool enables remote access for any application or service that advertises itself using Bonjour and runs over TCP/IP * Security: All network traffic is strongly encrypted. Access to your services requires your Mac OS X username and password * Dynamic domain name support * On the fly compression: Transfer large files quickly * Secure web browsing: surf the internet using your own browser securely * and much more.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed: Optimized for Mac OS X 10.6.2.
  • Updated: Improved compatibility with certain UPnP routers.
  • Updated: under the hood performance has been tweaked for enhanced stability and better performance.

ShareTool Reviewnever worked for me reliably - Version: 1.3.2, 11/9/2009 11:02AM PST

I have bought this product (plus a Mac Mini plus a DynDNS membership for a year). Installation was directly on the otherwise clean OS, all updates done, on a new Mac.

The problems I had were constantly the same: When I was traveling abroad, in need of the Tunnel to be there, the system would have hung itself up in an undefined state, stopping the system from rebooting (on automatic schedule to prevent the system to get in this state, but to no avail).

It would have needed a force quit every time, and their forums show I am not the only victim - the thread is open since an eternity with no final answer.

That kind of a behaviour contradicts the sense of the tool, because there is nothing you can do, travelling in Saudi Arabia to a hung-up system in Europe that refuses to reboot to get back in operations.

I am deeply disappointed, ShareTool overpromises and underperforms.

The documentation - e.g. what to do in a double NAT environment is non-existent. The "documentation" is claims, not information on what to do when your environment is different from the simplest of all. Not usable in a professional environment.

ShareTool ReviewGood but one thing missing - Version: 1.3.1, 10/14/2009 06:16AM PST

The product is good, with very good ease-of-use and interface. Secure screen sharing and data transfer via SSH works well.
One thing is missing for a true remote control: if the remote computer shuts down and restarts, there is no way to log in since ShareTool only starts working once login is done. So login must be done with a competing product, e.g. Timbuktu, which fills this gap. This feature seems indispensable to me - if I want to control a computer remotely, I want to stay in control!
Minor bugs which have cropped up from time to time have been fixed. Right now there is a problem with interaction with the KeyChain in Snow Leopard which will no doubt be fixed soon.
The product advertises on-the-fly compression for data transfer, but is nevertheless no faster than a competing product (iGet) which doesn't do this.
Upon sharing, ShareTool can alert the start of sharing via e-mail. However, the e-mail gives only the local IP number, which is useless for connecting via port forwarding if the remote computer is behind a router with dynamic IP address. It should also give the external IP (like GetMyIP or DynDNS) and include it in the e-mail.

ShareTool CommentarySham Reviews? Hope this thing is good - Version: 1.2.5, 1/31/2009 09:37PM PST

Sorry, just an observation. 1/2 of the top reviews are people who only have a 1 post history, specifically to gush over this specific app.

Sure, there is a real possibility that this is just a coincidence, and all I paranoid, but it is important that we keep the sanctity of Version Tracker, and let people know that this community notices these kinds of things, and those who try to sham us at VT should not get away with it.

But I am going to give this app a try, as it looks like a pretty good attempt at automating and creating a UI for a relatively complex procedure, Thanks
