Webbla ReviewGreat GUI, but needs work! - Version: 1.2.2, 1/1/2009 08:57AM PST

The following feedback was sent to Celmaro on 1/1/2009:

Happy New Year! So, I broke down and bought Webbla. If I'm being totally honest, I think it's a three star app at best, but I *LOVE* the GUI and really want to support your ongoing development. I have no doubt that it can and will mature into a five star product.

I've made a number of suggestions in the past - and all of them stand. I want a better tag cloud. I want the ability to EXCLUDE bookmarks with certain tags via a command key (ie: shift click a tag to exclude). Collections don't interest me at all. I'd like the ability to toggle between the Collections and Tag views, or better yet, hide Collections altogether. But I've said all this before and I appreciate your listening.

In the meantime, there are two, in my opinion, SERIOUS issues that need to be addressed:

First, where is the trash? When I delete a bookmark, Webbla does not ask for confirmation, nor is there a trash where I can retrieve deleted bookmarks. This makes accidentally deleting a bookmark VERY easy. Please add trash functionality!!!

Second, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add some sort of "Activity Monitor" for when Webbla is processing bookmarks. I still have two bookmarks that Webbla can't process (I contacted you about this a few weeks ago). Webbla gets stuck and keeps bringing the main Webbla window to the front, even if I'm in another application and have Webbla minimized. This is REALLY ANNOYING and makes using Webbla nearly impossible.

Furthermore, one of the web pages I have bookmarked (I can't figure out which one!) appears to play a sound when loaded. Webbla just repeats this sound over and over and over and over again. I have to mute my computer while Webbla is running because I can't figure out which bookmark is making the noise. Again, VERY ANNOYING!!!!!!! Webbla should NOT play sounds from a web page. I don't even understand why this happens. There's absolutely no point to it.

Webbla NEEDS to do a better job of letting the user know what it is doing and allow the user to cancel certain actions. If Webbla gets "stuck" processing a bookmark, there should be some indication of WHICH bookmark is the problem. And the audio thing is just plain irritating. If I can't figure out which bookmark is causing this problem, I can't really use Webbla because I'm not willing to mute my computer for the sake of a bookmark manager.

Thanks for listening. Best wishes and must success in 2009!

I'm still not willing to pay $15 for a bookmark manager that can't add bookmarks from one's browser. Sorry. That said, I'm very happy to see the addition of a tag cloud for searching. It's not nearly as nice as Yep's tag cloud, but it will do.

Add the ability to bookmark from within the browser AND specify bookmark tags when adding, and I'll gladly pay for it! The UI is very slick. I really like the thumbnail icon view. Very nice! The gray-on-gray bookmark info area is a bit hard to read, though. I'd also like the ability to show more bookmarks and less of the top bookmark info area. The note area is HUGE. Does anyone really need this much space to make notes about a bookmark???

Personally, I'd rather see the top bookmark notes area and the info area consolidated into a right-side inspector pane so that one can use the full window for viewing bookmark icons. Again, see Yep. Finally, I'm probably never going to use Collections. I'd like the ability to hide them so that I only browse by tag. The ability to switch between Collections and Tags in the left-side source pane would be really nice. Again, see Yep.

It's looking good. At this point, I give it 3 stars. Webbla definitely has the potential to be a five star app. It just needs a bit more work to get there...

Webbla CommentaryNeeds better browser integration and tag UI - Version: 1.0.2, 7/29/2008 09:03AM PST

Unless I'm missing something, is there no way to add a bookmark from Safari other than drag and drop? Not that I'm complaining about drag and drop, but I want to specify tags, etc. when I add the bookmark. Otherwise, I have to drag and drop, switch to Webbla, find the bookmark, add the tags, etc. Not very efficient...

Also, I'm most interested in Webbla for being able to tag my bookmarks and organize them that way. The absence of a tag browser (see Ironic Software's Yep) really makes tagging a half-baked feature. And it's not just Webbla. It seems that so many software makers implement tags, but fail to provide a good search UI. Instead, we're stuck creating "Smart" folders, which is grossly inefficient compared to a tag browser like Yep offers.

Overall, I like Webbla a lot, but until it offers better browser integration (Webbla menu bar item???) and a better way to find tagged bookmarks, I won't be buying.
