Glims ReviewSweet addon - Version: 1.0b22, 10/24/2009 06:31AM PST

Using it on Snow Leopard and Safari 4.03 and I find this addon extremely useful. Love the search suggestions. The default search suggestions in Safari are completely useless. Love all of the tab control stuff. The Full screen options (especially hiding the title bar) are brilliant and the ability to automatically open last tabs is sweet. Seems very stable on my setup. The one thing I'd like to see is in full screen view I love the ability to mouse over my dock. It would be nice to add that as a feature, or if someone can suggest a hack to do this I'd appreciate it. Good job.

Can you please find a way to reinstate the blue loading bar in Safari's address bar that Safari 4 took away? I hate the spinning circle and I would love to see the blue progress bar come back. Thank you.

Glims CommentaryGlims vs. Saft - Version: 1.0b21, 9/30/2009 12:48AM PST

There is some overlap in what Saft and Glims do, but they are essentially different programs. Among other things, Saft provides a granular method for blocking ads that Glims does not. But in years of using Saft I never dug into this feature to learn how to use it. I mostly used Saft to control tab behavior and, in particular, to automatically reopen all windows and tabs from my last session in Safari. Without this feature I had to remember to go to the History menu every time I launched Safari and select Reopen All Windows from Last Session. If I forgot to do so, all my windows and tabs were lost. Glims offers many of the same tab control features and more. And, unlike Saft, Glims does not require an update every time Safari is updated - though we did have to wait a few weeks for Snow Leopard support. In which time I paid for a Saft upgrade because I didn't know whether Glims would make it to Snow Leopard or not. I wish the developers had been thoughtful enough to let us know on their web site that a 10.6 fix was in the works - it would have saved me the $15 I spent on the Saft upgrade - which I now cannot afford to donate to the Glims project.

Another casualty of the changed environment in Snow Leopard is Pith Helmet, which I have used for a long time and found to be a most effective ad blocker. In it's place there is Glimmer Blocker, which does not hack Safari in order to block ads and hence does not suffer every time Safari changes. Also useful - and upgraded for OS X 10.6 - is ClickToFlash, which provides invaluable control over those annoying flash ads that clutter so many web sites now.

In sum, I use Glims because it doesn't break every time Apple updates Safari, which they seem to do on a monthly basis these days. Also, Glims has surpassed Saft in tab and window control, and I like some of the unique features it offers. That's not to say that Saft is defective in any way, and the author has found a way around the limitations Snow Leopard imposed on its previous method of operation. But I prefer Glims now - and it is freeware.

Glims Usage TipShould Saft-users switch to Glims? - Version: 1.0b20, 9/18/2009 03:30AM PST

Which Glims-only-feature/features or "better-realized-feature"
could force a mostly satisfied SAFT-user,
working with Leopard and Snow Leoprad
to switch to Glims?

What is missing, that Saft has and Glims does not?

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Set Safari to launch in 32-bit mode (Finder -> Get Info) and the Glims plugin will load. You won't be able to see/change the preferences in Safari... but it loads. So, if you had it installed under 10.5 and still have the user-specific preferences files ( the plist files & cache folder under /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Glims/ ), you'll be back up and running... more or less.

Glims Troubleshooting ReportDoes not work with Safari 4.0.3 - Version: 1.0 beta 19, 8/13/2009 12:07PM PST

Before Security Update 2009-004 GLIMS Search Engines defaulted back to Google. After Security Update 2009-004 GLIMS causes Safari to crash on launch. This happens with or without other InputManagers.

Glims CommentarySuddenly there's a need for a new Glims security setting - Version: 1.0 beta 15, 5/8/2009 08:33AM PST

In the last month or so I've been dealing with a new website behavior that Glims is in the perfect position to block. Upon clicking certain links, my Safari 3.2.1 window is rolled up into a small box (perhaps 2" x 2") in the upper-left portion of my screen, and the bookmarks bar and toolbar are gone! It's very annoying, and I never know which links are going to behave that way. After getting rid of that page (for I would NEVER allow a website to manipulate my surfing like that), if there were no other pages open when it happened, in order to return to normal window behavior I would then have to open a new page and select the Show Bookmarks Bar and Show Toolbar settings under the View menu.

Is anyone else experiencing this behavior, and did it start suddenly a week or two ago for you as it did for me?

This seems like just the kind of behavior Glims could stop by introducing a security tab that includes preferences to "Never allow a site to change the size of my browser window," and "Never allow a site to hide or show toolbars." If necessary, perhaps you could bundle those and other security settings together as behaviors that are prohibited for most websites but allowed for certain "trusted" sites that must be included in a special list through an app selection dialog.

This is the perfect opportunity for Glims to break into the provision of additional security, which ALL versions of Safari need more of. It's got to be the only major browser that offers next to NO security preferences!

SPECS: Late 2008 Unibody Aluminum 2.4 GHz Core2Duo MacBook with 4 GB of RAM running 10.5.6.
