Product Description:

Voluminous finds free, public-domain books on the Internet, downloads them, formats them for easier reading, and manages the collection. Offering more than 20,000 books from the outset, including many famous plays, novels, poetry and reference works, new titles are added to the catalogue regularly. Voluminous also includes a variety of ways to pick out the titles you want: search by title or author instantly, or browse the topic catalogue, based on the Library of Congress classification scheme.

What's new in this version:

Two notable improvements are designed to make on-screen reading easier for tired eyes:
  • You can now zoom the text size up or down
  • In full-screen mode, you can now change a book's margins, just by dragging them to a new width
Note that both these changes are temporary - meaning, they don't change the book itself, and won't affect printing - they just affect how the book is viewed on-screen.

Also, the book layouts are designed for "normal" size and margins - if you stretch either of these too far, the book's front-covers in particular may look rather strange! However, this probably doesn't bother you while you're engrossed in the book itself, and if large print or shorter lines help you read, you'll find this useful.

Another couple of features included in this version are:
  • You can drag-and-drop books, once they're downloaded, either to the Trash to delete them, or to a Finder window (or the Desktop) to make a copy.
  • Registered users can also now export books in a variety of formats: plain text, which writes out the original, raw text of the book (unprocessed by Voluminous), HTML which is the closest match to what you see inside Voluminous itself, and RTF which is compatible with TextEdit and other applications you're likely to have already on your computer.
There are also some new style variants. Someone asked specifically for a version of the Autumn style, but without the tree. Done! Also, two new Woodcuts.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC

Voluminous ReviewExcellent! Complete integration, very Macintosh-like interface - Version: 1.0.7, 10/31/2009 05:05PM PST

What an excellent software! Beyond comparison with the alternatives. As good as Stanza for iPhone, but much better than both Stanza and eReader (or anything for that matter) for desktop!
Its user interface is, unlike the competitors', very Macintosh-worthy. Voluminous has an integrated literature database (no need to seek it online: just type it in Voluminous and press "enter" - it will immediately fetch the book for you).
This is how I expect an eBook reader for the Mac to look and feel. The developer must consider programming for iPhone as well. My compliments!

to counterbalance the idiotic ratings below. The software looks good although i don't use it myself and can't vouch for how well it works. But given the idiotic 1-star reviews below, i felt compelled to counterbalance them.

I read a lot, and being able to read ebooks saves me from having a house full of stacks of books - Plus I actually find I read faster reading ebooks. And yes I do still buy the occasional printed book just because I miss the feel and smell. But, since the developer seems to be monitoring this Versiontracker page - How about an ereader for the iPod touch? eReader.com is a place where I buy lots of recreational reading, and they offer free eReader software for every OS and handheld device, except the iPod Touch - so far. Maybe you could get them to make you an offer. It would be almost transcendental to have an ereader like yours for the iPod Touch, something that works well to read with, and to organize a small library that a person might want to carry around. Among people who enjoy ebooks there is coming to be a mounting demand for a good ereader for the iPod Touch - something that would be compliant with Adobe licensed ebooks <i>and</i> generic commercial ebooks like those found at eReader.com.
