Product Description:

Voluminous finds free, public-domain books on the Internet, downloads them, formats them for easier reading, and manages the collection. Offering more than 20,000 books from the outset, including many famous plays, novels, poetry and reference works, new titles are added to the catalogue regularly. Voluminous also includes a variety of ways to pick out the titles you want: search by title or author instantly, or browse the topic catalogue, based on the Library of Congress classification scheme.

What's new in this version:

It's just a small update, mostly Fixamatron stuff, but we also fixed a couple of small bugs and added a new feature: My Bookshelf. When you click My Bookshelf, it filters the book catalogue down to just the books you have in your collection รข?? the same list normally shown in the sidebar, but whereas the sidebar is arranged to bring the books you're currently reading to the top, My Bookshelf works the same way the catalogue normally does, so you can look up specific titles or just browse your personal collection by author, subject, etc.

Voluminous CommentaryHow About... - Version: 1.0.4, 5/27/2008 02:00PM PST

I read a lot, and being able to read ebooks saves me from having a house full of stacks of books - Plus I actually find I read faster reading ebooks. And yes I do still buy the occasional printed book just because I miss the feel and smell. But, since the developer seems to be monitoring this Versiontracker page - How about an ereader for the iPod touch? eReader.com is a place where I buy lots of recreational reading, and they offer free eReader software for every OS and handheld device, except the iPod Touch - so far. Maybe you could get them to make you an offer. It would be almost transcendental to have an ereader like yours for the iPod Touch, something that works well to read with, and to organize a small library that a person might want to carry around. Among people who enjoy ebooks there is coming to be a mounting demand for a good ereader for the iPod Touch - something that would be compliant with Adobe licensed ebooks and generic commercial ebooks like those found at eReader.com.

Voluminous Developer NoteClearing up some confusion - Version: 1.0.3, 5/22/2008 10:05AM PST

wooji-juice (Wooji Juice)
Hello! I started Wooji Juice, and I'm the creator of Voluminous.

There seems to be a little bit of confusion about what our application is. I'm here to clear that up.

We don't sell books. We don't give them away, either -- we don't distribute books at all. We provide Voluminous, an eBook Reader. It's like a web browser for books, or maybe like iTunes for books: a tool for managing, reading, searching and converting.

Amongst the many features it offers is the search engine, which searches through a catalogue of Public Domain books. If you find one you like, it'll download it for you, and convert it into a format we think offers better quality. This feature might be why some people are confused.

Public Domain means no-one owns them, and anyone is free to copy them as much as they like.

We certainly don't claim to own these books. Here's how we've always explained it on our website:

 • Q. Do you provide the books?
 • A. No, we provide a tool to find them. The books already exist on the Internet. If you like, you can search for yourself and download them without paying us (or anyone else) a penny.
 • Q. So, where do the books come from?
 • A. Volunteers used to type them in, but these days they are usually scanned in using "Optical Character Recognition" technology. In other words, each page is digitally photographed and then automatically converted into text by a computer. Volunteers still proof-read them, though, to check for errors. A portion of your registration fee is donated to the non-profit organisations that scan, proof-read and make these books available.
I think that's pretty clear!

We also credit each book individually -- when you open one, a short note on the front cover explains where it came from, and there are full details at the back of the book if you're interested.

We explain all this happily because we created Voluminous as a way to make reading books on-screen quicker and easier. You can read books online already without paying us a penny, and it says so on our website. The difference is, we make it more convenient.
