Desktoptopia CommentaryDesktoptopia appears to have died - Version: 1.5, 5/14/2009 01:33PM PST

While the application still works with cached image files, it's no longer able to connect to its dead domain at desktoptopia.com. The program may no longer be in development or support.

Desktoptopia ReviewWorks okay, but has some issues on my setup. - Version: 1.5, 4/22/2009 10:44AM PST

I've used this for a few months now, and finally disabled it yesterday.

While I like the concept, and many of the images are nice, it was causing too many performance issues on my 2.3GHz G5 Tower. Every time the program launched, a process called "System Events" would take off, and use 50-80% of my CPU. I could quit the process and everything would work okay, but I still would get regular processor spikes as shown by iStat menus.

The other day, the program stopped working completely. It wouldn't load new images, and the menu item was hanging. I trashed prefs and reinstalled. No help. So I turned it off. My computer is running noticeably more smoothly. Perhaps on an Intel machine, these problems would be less prominent.

I've sent a couple of emails to the developer using the form on their site, but have never heard a response.

If they could iron out these problems, I'll give it another chance. Like I said, I like the concept.

Desktoptopia ReviewDoesn't work with PathFinder's desktop - Version: 1.5, 4/12/2008 05:44PM PST

This app seems like a good idea, except for two things that affected me -
1) I use PathFinder and have its desktop active. Desktoptopia doesn't seem to work in this scenario.
2) Using Desktoptopia's preferences, I tried to turn off some of its themes, one being "film", unfortunately, I got a warning window telling me I couldn't do that, since "film" was a sponsored theme (or something like that). I felt I was being forced to accept one of the themes I didn't want, and that didn't sit well with me.

I've removed it and have gone back to ChangeDesktop, which does work with PathFinder, although it does not provide its own images (it uses OSX).
