Product Description:

Dialectic is a highly versatile telephony tool that unites your Mac, data, and phones -- mobile, landline, & VoIP -- enabling you to be more productive. It allows you to find & select numbers and instantly dial them using a wide variety of phone devices or services.

Further, with its robust dialing rules, it can determine the call type (e.g., local or long-distance), transform the number as required (add prefixes or suffixes to the number, strip extraneous data, etc.) and route it to the appropriate phone as necessary. For instance, you could have local calls go to your landline phone, domestic long-distance go to your Bluetooth mobile, and international long-distance go to Skype.

When dialing, Dialectic also automatically configures your system (e.g., pause iTunes, change your iChat status, etc.) and restores it when the call is finished.

The other main feature of Dialectic is its Address Book menu providing you quick & intuitive access to your contacts, system-wide. Using this menu you can quickly see information, insert it into your current document, copy it to the clipboard, initiate a new phone call, email, or instant message chat, find addresses on a map and more.

Dialectic integrates with most leading contact managers, databases, & other applications. In addition, Dialectic provides a comprehensive call log, notepad, call timer, While You Were Out notes, and much, much more.

Finally, Dialectic is highly scriptable which means you can easily integrate it into your own workflow.

What's new in this version:

  • Added internal HTTP server for controlling Dialectic from Web-enabled devices & services
  • Added search filtering to the call log
  • Added AppleScript support for individual call log entries (you can now update names, flags, & notes as well as retrieve information from a script)
  • Added call timer auto start option to the Dialing preferences section
  • Added use of alternate dial string for CDMA phones when using the standard Bluetooth Phone Dial Method
  • Improved dialing Skype contacts using the Softphone Dial Method with Skype set as the softphone
  • Improved dialing with the modem when the modem is unresponsive or incoming call detection is enabled for the modem
  • Improved caller ID & missing name lookup accuracy
  • Fixed an issue with retrieving your Vonage number in the Vonage Dial method configuration screen when more than one number is associated with the specified account
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the main menu icon from appearing when launching a new version of Dialectic on Mac OS X 10.4.x
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the documentation to open a blank screen in the Help Viewer on some systems
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a window dragged to a secondary display to jump back to the primary display unexpectedly
  • Fixed an issue where holding down Shift & Control when selecting a phone number from the AB menu presented the Choose Action dialog when it should have presented the Choose Location dialog; Choose Action will now only be shown if Control is held without the Shift modifier as well
  • Fixed several issues related to Notifications & Dialectic Remote services when either the client or server machines went to sleep
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the Dial Method configuration list from updating properly when renaming, adding, duplicating, or removing configurations
  • Fixed some minor issues in the documentation
  • Updated the Firefox Extension with minor improvements (including Firefox 3 support)
  • Updated many interface elements & added minor code enhancements
  • Documented more hidden defaults you can set to further customize Dialectic to your needs

I love the built-in support for dialing the AddressBook with Quicksilver, as well as the AddressBook plug-in, and being able to dial any phone number on a web page or email. It works beautifully with Google Voice! Very nice!!!

I gave this a try since Tidbits recommended it. It didn’t work for me. So I quit it and trashed it. Shortly after that I rebooted and checked my system (OS-X 10.5.1) with DiskUtility. It got caught in an endless lope of reporting the same error. I rebooted; tried to repair things with the correct version of DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro. Neither could do anything with my HD. I know port hoc, ergo propter hoc is a logical fallacy, but prior to Dialectic I had had no troubles and afterward the pain to resstoring from back up a ravaged system. So I pass this on in the hopes of helping others.
