Apple iPhone SDK CommentaryHow to Install iPhone SDK on PowerPC Macs!!! - Version: 1.0, 3/10/2008 06:16PM PST

http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/03/10/surprise-iphone-sdk-also-works-on-powerpc-macs/

Though Apple states that the iPhone software development kit requires an “Intel processor-based Mac running Mac OS X Leopard,” developers have found that — with a little leg-work — the SDK also runs on PowerPC-based Macs.

By default, the iPhone SDK package available free from Apple’s site will run on a PowerPC-based Mac but omit the iPhone SDK-related files, installing only Xcode 3.1 beta and a series of other files. This routine is easily circumvented via the shareware tool Pacifist, which can be used to force an installation of the entire SDK package on PowerPC-based Macs.

Follow these steps:

Drag the iPhone SDK package onto the Pacifist icon
Select the top entry, “Contents of iPhone SDK”
Click the “Install” button in the upper-left corner and enter your administrator credentials

The “Aspen” Simulator, which is a Universal Binary, will properly launch and emulate iPhone applications on PowerPC-based Macs.

Windows users are still out of luck when it comes to the official SDK, though developers are currently seeking alternative, Windows-based deployment methods.

So, after we create our cool apps, how do we share them? Versiontracker is clearly uninterested, they do not even have a category for these. (However, "Palm OS" is listed!)

This appears to be poorly thought out.

Apple iPhone SDK CommentaryAccessing and download problems. - Version: 1.0, 3/7/2008 10:17AM PST

Since the announcement yesterday, I signed up for the 'free' download, received the email with the link/token, and clicked on it to access the page at developer.apple.com. I ALWAYS get a page that says "We are processing your request. Please wait a few moments then refresh this page.".

Of course, I wait a few minutes, then refresh the page, which refreshes to the same message about. For hours on end.

I am still trying this morning, and I am still getting the above message - and now download.

Have tried Firefox and Safari, and no dice. Last night, for a brief period, I was also getting the message that the server could not be found.

My guess is a vast overload of download requests, but does anyone else have any suggestions? I emailed Apple Dev support but have heard nothing.

Let's see ... one of the most anticipated SDK to come down the pike in a long time... maybe ever! It takes time to download 2.1 Gigs! The SDK is free and if you build FREE apps - you do not have to pay the $99 or $299 - both of which are pretty cheap when you consider the opportunity to introduce your product to 10,000,000 people by year end.

Whinging does not make things change - it only make you look childish

The iPhone SDK website is laid out well. Great instruction vids and documents and YES the download is slow... I guess it would be unless you have a T4 pipe.

All in all, I am very excited about this product and project. How would you like to have been in on the original Mac 3rd party software development. New GUIs, mouse, all of your computer in one little box... Well, here you are 1984 - again. And you are beotchin'!!!!

Give it a rest!

This makes the iPhone an enterprise giant!
The nail in the coffin for other smart phones.
The Touch will benefit nicely too.
100,000,000 in dev dollars?
Apple takes the prize.

Apple iPhone SDK CommentaryNot Universal Binary!? :-( - Version: 1.0, 3/6/2008 03:11PM PST

Why in the world has Apple not compiled this as a Universal binary? So much for Apple's PowerPC Mac commitment. :-(

In my email link from Apple:

"Thank you for registering as an iPhone Developer. To access the iPhone Dev Center and download the free SDK, simply click on the button below, and sign in using your Registered iPhone Developer Apple ID and password."

.. Now- I want my FREE SDK darn it! Who's in on the suit? I'm saving my email until this is FREE again and forwarding copies to the appropriate people. This is not cool. Free one moment then $99 or $299 the next? Bait and switch eh? This is like detouring me away from driving over the free bridge then directing me to drive over the toll bridge instead at full cost. No way- FREE is FREE.

Apple iPhone SDK CommentaryApple needs to use BitTorrents - Version: 1.0, 3/6/2008 12:45PM PST

Apple really needs to start using BitTorrents -- the lack of adequate connectivity to their downloads site is ridiculous for a technology company. Apple should use 'new' technology -- torrents.
