Product Description:

Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP , Mac OS X, and Linux.

Main Features:
  • Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
  • Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a storage device such as USB flash drive.
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
  • Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
    1. Hidden volume (steganography – more information may be found here).
    2. No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
  • Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.

What's new in this version:

  • On systems where certain inappropriately designed chipset drivers were installed, it was impossible to encrypt the system partition/drive. This will no longer occur. (Windows Vista/XP/2003)
  • Other minor bug fixes. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

TrueCrypt CommentaryWorks Okay - Version: 5.0a, 3/3/2008 11:31AM PST

I was hoping I could encrypt a small USB drive. The best TrueCrypt does is create an encrypted file. Apple's Disk Utility works better for this. Also, you need the app for encrypting and decrypting. The documentation says you can create "Travel Mode" files that don't require the app, but it doesn't seem to work on a Mac.

Might be a good solution for cross-platform encryption

I have been waiting for a Mac version...for so long. Great its here!

Some options are not available on OSX.
I run as a non-admin user for security reasons. So it wouldn't let me create a partition because it only asks for admin password, thus a miss-connect with user name and pw. Other programs ask for admin name and pw, so you can do admin stuff.

TrueCrypt CommentaryDoes not inspire confidence - Version: 5.0, 2/10/2008 12:00AM PST

Seems like this initial release for OSX has quite a few glitches that will need to be addressed. At this point this app does not inspire much confidence.
In addition, I don't think that this is going to be the cross-platform encryption panacea that everyone is hoping for... Example: If you have a TrueCrypt volume from a previous release which is in NTFS format then you will not have write access to it under TruCrypt on OSX !
