Bean ReviewLook no further - Version: 2.4.2, 11/30/2009 01:13AM PST

I've been hunting for something like this ever since I decided almost ten years ago that I wasn't prepared to keep paying Uncle Bill exorbitant sums for EvilEmpire Office. I used Mariner's word processor and spreadsheet for a long time, but the company seems to have lost interest in them: upgrades promised years ago have never materialised. I dabbled with most of the other Mac word processors but they all seemed too fiddly or too expensive for what they offered. I now use NeoOffice for heavy duty stuff - and I'm very pleased with it in most respects - but it is something of a sledgehammer/nut relationship for basic word processing.

Bean is exactly right: the developer, James Hoover, says it's a niche product, but it's a very big niche: I guess that 90 percent of folks would find that it satisfied 90 percent of their word processing needs. It works well, it's fast, it uses standard formats, it looks good - what more could you ask for?

Bean ReviewFuture sugest. - Version: 2.4.1, 11/18/2009 11:48AM PST

I like Bean, and I try to use it every time I don't need some "heavy" future, like calculation in tables, math formulas, ecc... But I found one thing that never NeoOffice or other Word Processor does: tiling wordprocessor window. Today I did some work where this future would be a great help, and I was really surprised that none had it (or better, only TextWrangler had it, but it's not a wordprocessor).

I've found the word processor I've been looking for since about 1985. Puts MS Word in the ground and I doubt I'll ever use Word again. Hard to believe it's FREE.

Bean ReviewGreat app. I recommended it to a friend, but lack of track-changes compatibility was a problem - Version: 2.3.1, 6/29/2009 03:09PM PST

The fullscreen editing option is particularly nice.
I recommended Bean to a friend, but it turned out that the show-stopper was Bean's inability to read "track-changes" edits in Word. I hardly ever use Word, so I hadn't noticed this. I guess that track-changes may be one of the very few extra features in Word that is actually useful, so adding this into Bean would significantly expand its appeal.

Bean ReviewNewbie but love at first ... use - Version: 2.3.1, 6/21/2009 07:08PM PST

I've tried so many note pads, sticky type apps, journaling apps etc. Pages has the templates yada yada - which is nice sometimes. Most of the time however, I just want to send something more than a sticky and less than Pages (and DEFINITELY less than Word). Preview is what I want but unfortunately that's not an option (I have PDF Pro etc but it's still not the same). TextEdit is ok but it's so basic that I still have to use other Word Processors often.

Enter Bean! YAY!!! I can use it for 90% of what I need to do. The built in link to Dictionary is brilliant. Even for stories or articles (I'm a writer) that will eventually need a creative writing app, I can jot down my initial idea in Bean and transfer it. And the price is right! Thank you Bean people.

Bean Troubleshooting ReportNumbered lines!? - Version: 2.3.1, 6/20/2009 04:58AM PST

I finally found a real problem with Bean. If I paste in numbered text, Bean puts a "tab" space in front of the numbers. If I attempt to take out the space, the number disappear, even if the numbers were typed in the copy before pasting into Bean.

Ouch!

I did find a work-around but it is extra work to select copy and manually move the first tab back to the margin.

I tried this and it really is a neat little app for working with text. The scaleable page slide is a very nice touch to the interface. Generally, the slide controls are a plus.
One must recall the inspector palette each time one starts the app. It might be useful to have Bean remember the general application state so that one does not need to pull up the palette.

This one is a keeper.

Bean ReviewQuick and clean - Version: 2.2.0, 5/14/2009 06:11AM PST

This is a simple word processor, with all the features we need for 99% of work. It is a step up from TextEdit (from OS X). The search and replace is more advanced.
The best feature is that it launches very quickly, less than 1 dock bounce for me. I also use Tex-Edit Plus and TextWrangler for special situations, but Bean's instant launch is nice.

Bean CommentaryBug? - Version: 2.2.0, 4/16/2009 01:42PM PST

I'm unable to open a text document, select a few words, and change the selection to italic without the entire document changing (same for boldface, underline, etc.). I've tried this on several files with the same result. Am I missing something, or is this a serious shortcoming/bug on Bean's part?

Bean ReviewWorks Great - Version: 2.2.0, 4/16/2009 10:48AM PST

Have been using macs since the Mac SE close to twenty years ago. Use a MacBook Pro intel core 2 duo and 10.4.11.
This software is better than AppleWorks 6 and is better than Notes for me. I have programmed in basic to a limited degree and the simplicity and flexibility of Bean is great. It has better font and style commands to name a few benefits. And this is for free??? How can I not give it 5 Stars. So far as "taking over" the default app position of your word processing, take a look at the replies to the guy that did not seek to contact the developer. I know we don't want to have to get a hold of the developer and shouldn't necessarily have to, and the developer I hope is sensitive to this. I have used Bean and after using AppleWorks 6 and Notes. It did not takeover my default. But, I am glad to refer to the good guy that responded to guy who was 'taken over." I learned from that guy and am smarter with all my apps because of it. Bean people, thank you, thank you, thank you. I want to send you money. I would be open to designing a module with you that could put you ahead of the other apps. If you were to have investment capital you could overtake NOtes (apple's WP) which is too mind cluttering complex; some of it is pocket protector work.
If you are thinking about an easy program that is very versatile. This is it!!
I want to thank the other posters for their comments as well. Communication is great.
