Took me several try on two computers before I got an uncorrupted download. . Once I got it to work, it was not very untuitive - I could not figure out what the heck it was supposed to be doing. probably my fault not Chipmunks, but before I got the hang of it, I got a notice that the Demo had timed out, and that I had to buy the real version to use it any longer. Uhmm, there was no warning/notice in the description that it was a demo, and not a fully functioning, albiet shareware, program,, far less a demo that would quit after ten minutes! Not only that, but the pay-us-or-else screen then wouldn't go away - it just sat there with that stupid twirly thing turning, and locked up my computer - couldn't make it go away or force a quit, so I had to do a full restart.

As the description says, it finds duplicates and gives you a logical way to remove them. For those of us with large libraries of samples and loops, it's a great way to keep your space needs down.

With sample libraries, it's a little tricky because an "instrument" will look in a specific place for the samples it needs. If more than one instrument need to access the same sample, it just takes more planning and organization to keep that alll straight. It might not be worth the space regained.

At some point, I had suggested that when removing duplicates, an alias to the remaining original could be an option. The developer explained why this might be a dodgy thing to implement. I like the basic way it works, once I got the hang of it. I have been going through various volumes and tidying up. I haven't had any problems with Chipmunk.

Thanks for a very useful utility.
Its reasonably fast (so long as you index under 10GB after that its slows down a lot)
its intuitive and easy to use.

Just ONE suggested Improvement:

when in folder tree view can double clicking on the folder OPEN that folder in FINDER directly so a quick inspection of contents be made before I find out I'm deleting the WRONG set! do that and you earn 5 stars all-round.

For years I have looked for the prefect duplicate finder for the Mac and I have tried many. All of them struggled to find the right metaphor for displaying and handling duplicates in an intuitive way. I don't think Chipmunk has it "perfect", but it is the best I've seen. Once you understand what "inside" and "outside" duplicates are it is very quick to scan through your files and move dups to the trash. It took about 2 hours to scan a nearly full 500Gb FireWire drive where I had backed up several drives more than once. I highly recommend this little app.

Chipmunk ReviewReally handy utility- esp for video, graphics, audio & music pros - Version: 1.0rc1, 3/17/2008 05:45AM PST

As an audio/music pro with a macbook, it is crucial that I not waste precious disc space on redundant, duplicate files. Sometimes files will have different names, but have the exact some contents. Sometimes I won't know which files are newest, or which version to keep. I found Chipmunk after searching VT for "remove duplicates". I gave it a try, liked it very much, and bought it.

Chipmunk allows me to choose locations or sets of folders to scan for duplicates. It creates a list of duplicates, and allows me to get rid of them one-by-one, or as a batch. There is an organized way the Chipmunk allows you to get rid of duplicates outside of, or inside of the current folder.

Because I have tons of samples in my instrument libraries, and audio files in my iTunes and elsewhere, Chipmunk had a pretty clever way of managing the data. I got a ton of space back on my macbook. I imagine this utility will be a great help for anyone with large numbers of iTunes tracks and photos.
