HoudahSpot CommentaryAnyone here ever try the FINDER? - Version: 2.5.10, 11/14/2009 08:43AM PST

I looked at this and it has a few cool features but it seems no one here has used the FINDER'S "Find" command nor ever looked at the "Other..." attributes options etc. MUCH of what this does can be done in the Finder and after looking at their web site and trying the program I came away thinking they've misrepresented what comes with EVERY Mac by way of searching because they seem to intentionally focus on Spotlight ignoring the FINDER'S "Find" command capabilities.

For more info:
http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=mac&seqNum=196

You can add multiple criteria and using the "Other" operator find using even more meta data.

Just a comment and FYI and not a "ding" on the application only pointing out your needs my be more than spotlight but less than what this offers and in that case the FINDER may work for you!

This application is exceptionally hideous and provides for a really janky experience, but if you can stomach that it kinda works, sometimes.

Bug fix: Ignored criteria on Leopard

HoudahSpot 2.5.9 running on Leopard could ignore criteria and report excess files in search results.

Bug fix: Missing files from results

When limiting the search to a fixed number of results, HoudahSpot sometimes listed fewer files than requested.

Bug fix: Memory leak

HoudahSpot could leak memory causing its memory consumption to build up over time.

Since VersionTracker didn't include the release notes for this update:

"This update brings Snow Leopard compatibility to the select few who run the developer preview version.

This version includes a handful of minor bug fixes."

You know, I hate to throw cold water on this, but the program is hard to use. It does supply some features that spotlight should probably have built-in. However, it has the look and feel of a program that was not thought out at all when it was initially released and has simply had little pieces tacked on here and there. The developer needs to take this rather nice application from a technical aspect and turn it into a user-friendly program. The people out here who are raving about it are clearly people who have figured out how to use it, and that's nice, but if anyone actually wants this program to be accepted by the general Macintosh community the program clearly needs an overhaul.

This is a terrific piece of software. I don't use Spotlight anymore and find the UI for HoudahSpot superior. Nice addition to the Mac OS. Try it - you'll like it!

Since I downloaded HoudahSpot a few months ago I wonder how I could do without it. It is far superior to Spotlight, which I stopped using altogether. Searching is flawless, you can search for a range of various criteria. Searching is fast, delivers good results, and so far I did not find a single glitch or bug.

A really well done piece of software. Well done, Houdah!

HoudahSpot runs rings around Spotlight. You can find everything you're looking for VERY quickly and you can create all the templates you need to do highly customized searches. Although HoudaSpot depends on the Spotlight index to do its searches, it seems to do them with a much higher success rate.
