Product Description:

This toolkit lets users open and play Vision Research's Phantom Cine movie files. Vision Research creates and manufactures high speed digital cameras that can capture imagery at several thousand frames a second. Their cameras have been used in many industries, including Science, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Defense, as well as Film and Television.

This package lets the user open the raw Phantom Cine movies and choose from different debayer algorithms, color correction matrices, as well as white balance and gamma modes. A SMPTE Timecode track is created as well, from the Timestamps inside the Phantom Cine file. As with any QuickTime component, the Operating system is fully aware of the new file format, allowing for Finder Thumbnails, and Spotlight integration.

QuickTime aware applications will be able to load the Phantom Cine files just as they would any other QuickTime movie. These include Final Cut Studio 2 and Final Cut Studio 3, iMovie, and others.

What's new in this version:

  • White balancing step has been moved so that it is done on raw sensor data.
  • White balancing has been updated to use the VR 675 software release.
  • CineStation based Cine files are altered to look like "660/Phantom HD Rev B" cameras (A fix for a specific bug in the CineStation)
  • Matrix math has been fixed, so that saturation is kept in check.
  • Direct Kona 3 10-bit RGB is now available for FCP7 Users.
  • Vertical and Horizontal overrides have been fixed.
  • Rec709 Gamma code has been adjusted.
  • A couple of memory leaks have been addressed.
  • Matrices have been updated for the various camera models.
  • UTI descriptions updated/fixed for Snow Leopard.

Phantom Cine Toolkit for Final Cut Studio CommentaryThank you... - Version: 1.0.1, 12/28/2007 04:17PM PST

To the developer. I just received a Miro Color high speed camera at work and was disappointed to find NO support for the mac in the software provided. On a whim I did a google search and found your application. GREAT... Just in time. I suppose Vision Research's focus on the scientific aspects of high speed videography has led them to this window's centric solution set (an assumption that is getting very old - yep, scientists use macs too... ) However; their new product offering in the HD high speed realm will certainly dictate that they get familiar with the mac... Using PC's in Hollywood is not entirely PC. But I digress. Thanks for getting the functionality right, and getting what appears to be a reliable product to market just when I needed it.

Sincerely,

DJP

Phantom Cine Toolkit for Final Cut Studio CommentaryDramatically eases workflow from Phantom cameras - Version: 1.0, 11/1/2007 12:30PM PST

I've been beta testing this product as it's development matured over the past month. For a "rev 1" it is in very good shape and very usable. It works with all cameras currently being shipped by Vision Research, with the exception of the V5.1 (which does not use a Bayer CFA, so requires considerable additional coding on de-bayering algorithms).

As a Mac user, it is really great to see a product that allows me to directly view .cine files on a Mac and in QuickTime. And, the ability to drag cine files onto the FCP timeline is a huge time saver, avoiding the need to convert the cine files to TIFFs, for example.

The image manipulation pipeline and tools are exactly what Phantom customers have been asking for.

The Spotlight integration is an extra bonus, giving me access to almost all of the cine file metadata through "get info" and allowing me to search for a specific cine file easily.

Given Bob's history with his other QuickTime plugin products, I'm sure this one will continue to evolve and improve as he gets user feedback.
