Sapiens CommentaryBad Launcher - Version: 1.1, 7/8/2008 03:14PM PST

I don't know how this can be termed an 'application launcher', since every time it starts an app the app ends up behind all other programs. You then have to bring it to the front to interact with the just launched application. I emailed the developer about this on June 23, 2008 and as of today, July 8, 2008, have not received any kind of response. If they respond this way to someone who has actually paid money for this program, then how will they treat everyone else?

I truly regret spending money on this, and don't use it anymore.

Sapiens ReviewUseful & works on Leopard - Version: 1.1, 3/23/2008 07:45PM PST

I'm still trying out Sapiens, but it is nice to have yet another option of opening programs. It's cool how it groups types of programs (that you use) into categories.

One thing I wish it had was a way to open a Finder window. Since I go down to the dock & click Finder 10-15 times a day, this would be useful. Overall, a handy little addition to OS X.

Works perfect on my PowerBook G4 with 10.5.2. It also works very fast, unlike another user's comments stated. The only bummer is I don't think it's worth $20.

I like the concept and can see a lot of work and thought went into this app. I'm reverting back to Quicksilver because it's more responsive. A launcher need to respond instantly or at least start caching keys that I'm typing prior to showing the interface. It always seems to lag a couple of seconds behind my input.

Look forward to trying it again if it speeds up.

I see lots of potential for this app, but my experience so far has been fairly disappointing. I have it come up with some pretty bizarre choices and when I right-click on them to tell Sapiens to "forget" about them, Sapiens ignores my commands. Once the bugs, etc. are worked out I'll review this again and hopefully find this more useful. In the meantime, I'm going to let it run and see how smart it hopefully gets over time and maybe the things will also start remembering what I tell it to forget. On the big plus side, I love the circle gesture methodology, interface, etc. overall and I really look forward to seeing newer versions with all the bugs/kinks worked out. At the moment I can't honestly recommend Sapiens... but I'll do so anyway, in hopes a bunch of people try it and send the dev bug reports, feature requests, etc. and make it something we can all use all the time. Also, anything that pushes gestures forward (like xGestures, etc. does) is something I want to support. Afterall, it's almost 2008 for crap's sake.. shouldn't we ALL be using gestures like crazy by now? I use gestures (with xGestures) constantly myself and save massive time and completely avoid RSI in the process. You have to be on crack to want to use a computer without gestures after having set up xGestures properly. Hopefully, Sapiens will be my next load of good quality crack on top of all the gesture crack I already smoke.

It's a gesture based take on the rash of keyboard launchers that have sprung up over the last few years. Except where those are smart and you can launch things with a contextual basis, this app has none of that.

You make a circle, which it sometimes recognizes and sometimes doesn't, and you get a circle full of meaningless apps arranged in no particular order. Yes I know it says it will get "smarter" over time but that doesn't really help when it starts off so stupid that I can't use it.

It also has a feature where you can drag a document, make a circle, and supposedly get a display of applications to use that document in. Great finally some context. Wrong! Instead you don't get a bunch of applications which can open said document, you get the same randomly assorted default bunch you get without dragging a document. To make matters worse you cannot use the search function when you are dragging something.

Written documentation is nearly non-existant and you can only get some information by watching a video tutorial.

The application itself is fairly nice looking and makes good use of animation. However much like this companies other applications (Dock Fun, Sticky Windows) it's half baked and doesn't work how you would expect.

Application is basically useless in it's current form.

Amazing user interface, I love the way it shows the Desktop background.

Awesome launcher, very visual, what I always wanted!

Really cool artificial intelligence applied to a ripetitive task such as launching app, works like a charm!
