OpenDNS Updater Reviewworks, but several issues - Version: 2.5, 7/30/2008 12:35PM PST

this tool takes much more memory than its tiny task should need; over 100MB of private memory after it ran for a few hours on my Intel/10.4.11 system; this might be a memory leak; for something that runs 24/7 this is way too much for me...

also, since it is a free app with no implicit contract, and since i'm giving it my OpenDNS password, i really think it should be open source so that i can be comfortable what it's doing with my info...

also some smaller problems:

  • Preferences window gets lost behind other windows -- once another window is in front of it, can't command-tab to it, can't resurface it by selected Preferences from the menu item, must hide everything or use Expose
  • About window sometimes displays behind current app, result is similar problem to Preferences window
  • after manually running Check for Updates, the menu item's menus are permanently greyed out
finally, a feature request: new IP notification through Growl

OpenDNS Updater may quit at launch. Put OpenDNS Updater in the global exclusion list in the APE preference pane and it should fix the problem.

This app just makes one task so much easier. And I don't have to remember to do it, it just does it. And since OpenDNS has a proven track record for thwarting the known bad sites, there is no reason not to use the app. I will continue using it as long as its around.

OpenDNS updater is very useful and simply works as advertised.

Unlike the previous poster, I have been very pleased with both OpenDNS and OpenDNS Updater. This service has been very helpful on my home network and offers features (such as blocking porn sites and anti-phishing) that are not available from my ISP.

OpenDNS Updater ReviewNew usage, but impressed so far... - Version: 1.0, 9/16/2007 12:28PM PST

I just used this utility for the first time. For those of us who have IP addresses assigned dynamically, this is a GREAT tool for keeping your IP address up to date with OpenDNS. It is vital to keep your IP up to date as the filtering that OpenDNS provides won't happen without the correct IP address.

Despite having just used this for the first time, I'm VERY impressed with how it worked. and am excited that it was designed to lookup the external IP address (not my internal network IP) and send it on the OpenDNS account you login to in the tool.
