Rise up Mac users! - Version: 2.1.2, 11/25/2009 10:58AM PST

I think it is about time Mac users were to challenge the Windows monopoly on interfacing peripherals to computers. I am running into the same thing with the modem I use for getting online (flashware for the device is available for Windows but not Mac). Now that Macintosh is fast approaching 20% of the market, isn't about time we challenged this monopolistic approach in the courts?
Terrible software for good hardware

Oh dear, it's Garmin. I've got an Edge 705 - fantastic hardware, ABYSMAL software. This is just one example of how Garmin makes everything as difficult as possible for the user. When you buy the unit, it says 'Mac compatible' on the box - but what they don't tell you is that you need a PC as well as your Mac to get the maps onto your GPS.
The best solution I've found so far (after 4 months using the unit and loving it) is never to touch any of their software and use a third party app (I like Ascent) as much as possible.

This is typical Garmin. Its incomplete software from a company specializing in lousy interfaces, lousy customer service and proprietary products.
MacGPS, plus MapTech charts plus just about any receiver you want to use. A lot less money and a more pleasant experience.
I use a Garmin (marine) but would certainly have looked at other receivers had I known the above when I bought it.
