iPod Touch no longer visible on my Mac with 3.1.3

Since installing 3.1.3 on my iPod Touch, iTunes doesn't recognise it any more. Therefore I can no longer sync it or charge it! I guess I'll have to do a factory restart & hope I'll be able to reinstall 3.1.2. Wish me luck & DON'T UPGRADE TO 3.1.3!!!
Battery behaving erratically after the update - Version: 3.1.3, 2/5/2010 08:04PM PST

I thought this update will improve the accuracy of battery life indicator, but it seems to do the opposite.
I had been using the phone for 2 months now and didn't experience any problem with the battery life indicator. However, after installing this update last night (less than 16 hours ago, as of this post), my phone has shut down 2 times even when the battery levels were around 20%. After plugging it into the power source, it look about 30 mins to come back to life on both occasions. Something isn't right with this update.
I'm wondering if I go back to the factory defaults and then restore from backup, would it allow me to select the firmware that I want to upgrade to, or will it automatically go to the latest available version.
Any help will be appreciated.
