Product Description:

Wallsaver is a Cocoa application (written in AppleScript) that allows users to run their screen savers as their desktop wallpaper.
  1. Wallsaver doesn’t have to be running 24/7. You can launch Wallsaver, activate your screen saver, and then quit the program. Restoring your desktop is just as easy. Open up Wallsaver, click “Restore, and you’re set.
  2. It’s simple. The original application was only 30 lines of code.
  3. It’s cool. Now you can show off the full potential of your Mac by letting it power through a task that would bring a PC to its knees.
  4. It’s Universal. Universal Binary, that is.

What's new in this version:

  • Updated French localization to v2.2.1 (Thanks to Yann Ricquebourg and Hervé Sainct.)
  • Fixed bug that would result in "Hide before activation" always being checked
  • Removed outdated localizations as they were causing problems with v2.x code (Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Polish, and Czech).

Wallsaver ReviewWow! The Coolest little app ever! - Version: 2.5.3, 10/10/2009 02:08AM PST

ILuvMacMost
I love this application. I have a PPC Mac running Tiger 10.4.11. I installed and ran this awesome application with absolute ease. I have access to all of my screensavers and can choose from any one of them. It runs great and posed no problem of any kind for me. It is a real trip to work on my Mac while the screensaver is running in the background, behind my icons, at the same time. It may be considered a useless creation to some people, but it is way too cool to me!

Wallsaver Troubleshooting ReportTried it, ran into problems. - Version: 2.3.2, 9/25/2008 02:47AM PST

Neat idea, but I had some problems. I am running Leopard (10.5.5) on an Intel Core Duo Mac Mini.

The first problem I discovered is that not all of my screen savers are available to Wallsaver.

I use iPhoto '08, which adds a lot of items to the list of screen savers in System Preferences: each of my events shows up as a possible screen saver, as does "Flagged," which shows all the photos I have flagged in iPhoto, and which I use for my actual screen saver. However, when I go to select a screen saver module for Wallsaver, these options are not present in the list that Wallsaver gives me to choose from.

(At this point, I'm sure some readers are ready to suggest the RandomExtra workaround, so I'll save you the trouble: I tried it. I went to the RandomExtra options and chose "Flagged" as my only module. When I activated my screen saver to test it, it worked just as expected: it displayed my flagged photos from iPhoto. However, when I went to Wallsaver and selected RandomExtra as my module for Wallsaver and activated it, I got a black desktop with the following message in the middle: "Something is wrong! I am sad that I cannot pick a module for you. -- RandomExtra")

So I settled on another module, and then I discovered the second, more serious problem: when Wallsaver is running a screen saver module as my desktop background, I cannot start my actual screen saver, either by Hot Corner or by idle time. (The Test button in the Screen Saver preference pane still works, but I can't activate the screen save "for real" unless I first deactivate Wallsaver.) Since I rely on the screen saver to secure the computer when not in use, this problem means I cannot use Wallsaver.
