Flux ReviewNice, and always improving - Version: 2.38, 10/19/2009 06:22PM PST

blizzaster
Flux has taken on a challenge that really no other app has - full web design with a full OSX interface. This isn't one of the template systems, like iWeb, Rapidweaver, Sandvox, Freeway, etc. It allows true design of custom sites using web standards. It isn't perfect, but it stands alone, and the developer is continuously improving it, is responsive to bugs, and releases timely updates.

It might be easier to evaluate v.2 if the user manual bore more resemblance to the app!

Flux Troubleshooting ReportSlow to the point of unusable. - Version: 2.30, 9/16/2009 09:09AM PST

Experiencing the same issues as the previous poster. Flux has proven to be very unresponsive.

  • Opening an existing site incurs a significantly long spinning beach ball.
  • Then, once loaded, the first attempt to even scroll down the list of the site's contents immediately gives way to another frustratingly long, spinning beach ball.
  • Reluctantly deciding to wait it out, I switch to another open application while I wait, and while I can successfully switch to other applications, the Flux Insprector window decides to accompany me and floats atop any application I switch to.
  • Eventually I end up Force Quitting Flux.
  • I try Flux again, but this time simply create a new, blank site. Unfortunately I run into all of the same, irritating hang times.

Something definitely doesn't seem right here. This application was at first intriguing, but the fact that it can't even keep up with basic operations is definitely a red flag. Any suggestions?

Flux CommentaryLooks great, but does it work well? - Version: 2.30, 9/2/2009 11:21AM PST

I have no idea whether or not this thing is useful in any way whatsoever since I haven't had time to test drive it yet. All that I can say upfront is that on the surface it sounds like a great idea, and from opening it up and tooling around just a little bit I see that it looks very cool!

That said, if it can't make anything easier or fails to respect web standards and so forth it will be just another worthless piece of eye candy.

To be continued : )

Flux ReviewUseless for me - Version: 2.16, 5/9/2009 09:57PM PST

I just downloaded it. Open a site folder on my hard disk then looked at one file. I did not save anything. I just looked.

When I came to work on the file later the PHP tags had been removed and the replaced with Flux comments. Fortunately this file had only one PHP tag include a menu. Some of my pages have hundreds of PHP tags that would have taken hours to put right.

I will not open the application again. It goes in the trash

This thing just added over an hour worth of work going back and deleting all the extra css it just had to add to my stylesheet with out me saving anything!! I keep seeing this thing pop up on VT and now they have a sail over on macZOT so I thought I would download it and see for myself how good it really was. I have been working on a web project for a new clint all weekend and Flux just decided to go and add a bunch on useless code with out telling me what it was doing! Just my css for the logo went form:
#logo{
position:relative;
height:140px;
width:720px;
background:#003300 url(img/logo.jpg) no-repeat 0 0;
text-indent:-9999px;
}

too

#logo{
position:relative;
float:none;
left:0px;
top:0px;
height:140px;
width:720px;
background-image:url(img/logo.jpg);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position:top left;
background-color:#003300;
background-attachment:scroll;
text-indent:-9999px;

}
and then it has the balls to tell me my xhtml can not be saved because it can not be validate. BS - it validate just fine.

Wow! This is outstanding to see that our deep desire for Rails support is being added. Bravo fellows, keep up the outstanding work and lets see some interesting innovation from an ide built entirely in Cocoa. This could prove to be quite amazing in terms of interesting and unique new capabilities in RAD.

Flux CommentaryGreat idea; no standards. - Version: 1.2, 4/21/2008 06:56PM PST

This must be for the iweb type crowd: people who just want to tinker a little and put up some photos for their family or something. If you develop actual web material, this isn't even in the ballpark.

Flux ReviewI wanted to like this... - Version: 1.1.1, 3/27/2008 03:06AM PST

The idea of this program is good - not great - but workably good....

EXCEPT FLUX is slow, very slow.

Their own CSS provided TEMPLATES - didn't validate. Too many errors.

Selecting was okay - but slow.

Documentation differs from what they have on their website. So use their website help - rather than the supplied Help file with the program. Also - their website doco is inside their website - which has a very small window - and quite annoying to navigate - but to get questions answered - you're better off at their website.

Their website screams that the program is out of beta -
my opinion is that this program still has a long way to go - so I'll restate this differently:

This program has potential - just needs a lot more work !!!
