OmniWeb CommentaryAd and Flash Blocking Ridiculously Byzantine - Version: 5.10.1, 8/29/2009 02:12PM PST

It's not as though users haven't asked Omni for years to make ad blocking a simple Command-Click menu item, but nobody is listening. Sure, you can block ads, but the method is unnecessarily complicated compared with AdBlock on Safari or Adblock Plus on Firefox. If this feature were fixed, OmniWeb would be the browser of choice.

OmniWeb ReviewI wanted to like it - Version: 5.9.2, 4/4/2009 05:08PM PST

I really wanted to like this browser but working with blogger was just a nightmare and I use blogger a lot. It also couldn't render my blog properly which was odd. It split t into 2 tabs. No other browser does this and I test it on an browser I can get my hands on. I'm using a standard template also.

The browser is fast and has a lot of preferences that you can teak which is nice. I grew tired of being handcuffed by Safari but don't care for drawers that slide out. Not a bad thing just not for me.

With this browser becoming free and the Omni group more or less saying they're going to focus on other things, I think this long standing browsers days may be numbered.

Nice speed but the bad WYSIWYG editing was a deal breaker for me. If you don't blog, this will be a fine browser for you. Best of all, it's now free.

Wonder of wonders! Years ago I licensed OmniWeb (don't recall its v. at that time) and liked its adaptability. But at times I went on to try other browsers and OW sat on the sidelines, except for now and then revival, such as editing HTML or testing odd page rendering in another browser. Its current superior adaptability to specific sites (setting font size, for example, at a news site that specifies small font size) coupled with speedy rendering makes OmniWeb once again my favorite browser.

This just-released version of OmniWeb has so far been excellent, never crashing, and rendering 99.99% of pages flawlessly.

Gopher is amazing - a whole new paradigm for using the Internet. OmniWeb has let us join the frontier.

But seriously - OmniWeb has been my browser of choice since it launched. The ability to set site by site preferences is the present reason why I love it. There have been others in the past - like the ability to flick from site code to site view - a great boon for a teacher marking web page coding assignments. I still like the visual Tabs down the side - I much prefer to read regular text length as opposed to text lines that seem to go on for far too long on a widescreen display.

I'm still chuffed about Gopher however.

This OW version is fast, stable, more pleasing to the eye than all the others. Just as fast as Safari 4. Have come back to it after Safari 3 and 4 and a fling with FF - it's just a joy to use. So good to be rid of those vile new S4 tabs and not to have to worry about the constant struggle of up-dating the plug-ins.

Have been a paid-up user for years and don't give two hoots if it is now free.

I bought this browser when it was the only one that worked correctly for an important website I needed to use. I've kept up with the updates and then as of the last update, noticed it was now free. If they were going to go free, they should have upped the version to six or something. Why should the version we paid for now be free?

You may think I'm splitting hairs, but we paid for version 5.x and now everyone gets what we PAID for, FREE. By upping the version to six, they would have least honored those who supported the product with money and created a clean break for their new free product. I've given them a lot of money over the years for products, I own most of the pro versions of their apps and I am disappointed they couldn't handle a transition like this a little better. You have to wonder if they just take the money we have paid for product and updates for granted. Maybe they should choose another role model other than Redmond.

Fantastic browser just trumped Safari again! Combined with FiOS, it's unbeatable IMHO.

I tried to Safari 4 beta, but there's something I don't like about Apple's insistence on adding that finder quicklook idea to its browser, among other apps.

OmniWeb ReviewThe new sneaky peek version is howlingly fast - Version: 5.9.1, 3/12/2009 11:32AM PST

I've always liked the OmniWeb interface and have been using it for a long time (since the NeXT days), but the new sneaky peek version of 5.9.2 (based on the Safari 4 Beta version of WebKit), http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/download/sneakypeek/
is also Acid 3 compliant and has SunSpider times that are 4 times faster than Safari 3.2.1 on my MacBook Pro (2.4GHz) and 2.2 times faster on my Quad G5. Bravo .....

OmniWeb ReviewStill Underwhelmed - Version: 5.8, 1/10/2009 12:54PM PST

Bought the software --- my only browser I've paid for.

Nothing I've complained about has been addressed.

1) Non-standard "Home" page configuration [*every other* browser has "Home" page and "New" tab/window independent of each other. In OmniWeb, if you open a new tab/window, you get your "Home" page --- if it's selected. This is STUPID]

2) Non-standard Tab arrangement [in "drawer" along side]. Although I've gotten used to it, I still prefer (as most people do, apparently) the *conventional* arrangement.

3) Memory leaks: well noted and documented.

4) Performance: Sluggish in comparison to Firefox and other *free* browsers. Good example? Bookmark toolbar. I try accessing a bookmark located there. It's a distinct and *very* noticeable delay --- especially when compared to Firefox, which I use most regularly.

5) Kludgy Bookmark filing: I have over two thousand bookmarks in scores of folders. When I want to file a *new* one, the dialogue box *always* displays my entire collection with *all* folders opened by *default.* Consequently, if I want to file a bookmark in one of the last folders, I can almost count (while *scrolling*) "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three, one . . . " Inexcusable. How can free browsers perform better and be more regularly *improved?*

Again, this is the only browser I have paid for and I *should* expect more.
