I find this program works wonderfully. I like it better than Wireshark, because you don't need to go into the terminal and type Unix commands to get the program installed/running.

The author was quick to respond to a question I had on the appllication.

I have this running on an Intel Mac Mini on 10.4.11. When I started it, it could not find any devices to monitor and brought me to the preferences window. I tend to be the type who reads the manual only if I can't get the software to work. In this case, no need. I clicked on 'scan', I think, and it found my Ethernet adapter. I clicked on capture and it did a fine job of displaying my traffic. It's just a tad annoying to enter my root password every time I ask for a trace, but I can live with that.

The program identified a lot of udp, broadcast, and arp commands coming from my Verizon DSL modem. Apparently, Verizon likes to keep tabs on all devices connected to their network at an interval of less than 1 second. I thought I had a virus. Well, kind of.

Cocoa Packet Analyzer ReviewGreat gem of an app - Version: 0.57, 3/11/2009 07:51AM PST

I needed to analyze a network-related app issue. Looked at other things, including loading Shark on a Linux box. Tried this, and worked perfectly! Let me isolate the bad network call and document the problem (and eventually get it fixed). Great app. Never had a problem with it. Now has a permanent home in my Utilities folder. Highly recommended.

Cocoa Packet Analyzer CommentaryNasty Bug - Version: 0.47, 3/25/2008 11:36AM PST

As soon as I setup CPA to start a capture, it locked up my connection to my AirPort Extreme Base Station N via WiFi. I did the usual stuff to troubleshoot the router and my MacBook (with 10.4.11) and found the sole culprit was CPA. As soon as I quit the app everything worked fine. Note that I was able to connect to other WiFi routers (silly humans!) but not to mine! WTF? Sorry if this is a 'feature' but this newbie was not impressed.

As for starting up and the GUI: They are working fine in this version. You can choose what 'interface' you want to use in the Preferences.

Next beta please!

I opened this little guy and no UI?

Does it capture packets or just display them (do I need to use ethereal or other to actually grab the packets)?
