Product Description:

Omikron Basic is a very comprehensive programming language, which allows you to write real BASIC programs as well as to build extensive applications. All of the important commands, operators, and functions are supported. Like in C, it is possible to pass pointers of variables and functions to procedures and other functions. You also have full access to all functions of the Macintosh operating system and can write your own libraries to extend the command set for special purposes. For people who don't want to bother with programming user interfaces, Omikron Basic provides automatically handled output windows with a V52 terminal emulation, which allows the simplest program to run in the multitasking environment of the Mac OS. Nevertheless, using the EasyGem library it is possible to provide your program with very sophisticated, graphical user interfaces. Other libraries are available for numerical, statistical, and complex number calculations, as well as for Assembler programming. The editor is very easy to use and includes, among many other features, syntax checking on input, color-coding, sophisticated search and replace functions, multi-window editing, symbol listings, memory inspection, and variable inspection. Also included are the compiler, the source code debugger, and the library maker. The compiler is very fast and generates compact and highly optimized code. Processing times are short, so you can easily develop programs by modifying and testing them.

What's new in this version:

This version creates so-called Carbon applications, which run native under Mac OS X but can also be started with Mac OS 8 and 9 if CarbonLib has been installed. A Carbon program is easily created by adding the compiler control word COMPILER "CARBON" into the program. COMPILER "CLASSIC" can be used to create a Classic application, which is also started in the Classic environment if Mac OS X is installed. CALLR is a new BASIC command. Use this command to call assembler subroutines in an especially efficient manner because all parameters are passed in registers and not on a stack as with the normal CALL command.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1
  • Mac OS Classic

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS 8.6 or higher
  • or
  • Mac OS X 10.1 or higher

OB 8 is one of the best programming languages on the Mac. If you want - and if you can :-) - you really can do everything with it. Not only if you are using the libraries of this great software. No other language has these features... Great, that this line is continued with OS X...

Omikron Basic ReviewKick-Ass - Version: 7.5, 6/4/2004 04:11PM PST

I use this product on OS-9 and it's awesome. I don't mean that as a hyperbole, either. The program does EVERYTHING the old Professional Basic on the PC did (the precursor to visual Basic) did. It did everything AC Basic on the Apple IIgs did (AC Basic was related to QuickBasic Mac but sucked less). It does everything Z-Basic on the Mac did. It's freaking awesome (the old MacAddict happy guy). I wish they'd make a PC version too. I bought this and am upgrading to 8.0 as we speak.

Oh, and their tech support is great. When I found an obscure bug, they emailed me an entire new beta version for free so I could make my program work. These are AWESOME people. If you like to program for fun, if you want to make your old PC, Apple II, etc programs run, this is for you.

My sole (tiny) complaint so far has been that the file I/O routines are very different from what I'm used to. But that's me.
