Product Description:

Phynchronicity is a graphical user interface (GUI) for the Fink Unix-software package management system on Mac OS X (http://www.finkproject.org). Fink is a powerful command-line tool for installing and updating thousands of Unix-based applications for the Mac. But Fink's sheer power and scale make it hard to use, even with a GUI.

Phynchronicity aims to make Fink easy to use. Unlike other GUI tools for Fink, it does not overwhelm you with options. Instead, with a simple three-pane interface, it lets you get started doing what you want to do--finding, installing, and removing packages.

What's new in this version:

  • Now built on the Cocoa frameworks.
  • Updated user interface includes more modern button styles.
  • Context-sensitive popup menu in table display.
  • Now checks for Fink installation on startup and notifies user if Fink not found.
  • Better experience for first-time users; fewer popup dialogs, smoother startup.
  • Faster, more intuitive help viewer.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Fink installation

... from the comments below... this has evolved into a fine package. I'd suggest checking out this latest version before depending on 2-year old comments.

It's definitely time for a replacement for Fink Commander and this very well may be it some day. Unfortunately, it has a rather ugly UI that seems to come over from GNOME or Windows (the developer used to developer for Linux and Windows too). Also it doesn't give very good indications that it has finished a task. I like that it tries to simplify the building and package managing of Fink, but it lacks some more advanced features. The category column is a very nice feature that Fink Commander lacks. I have no problem supporting a developer's work when it adds value, ease of use, better user experience, etc., but for right now $20 is a bit much for an unpolished application.

Sorry -- I think this wll be a tough sell. I've been extremely satisfied with FinkCommander for several years now, and I'd like to see something in the blurb that tells how this product is superior, and why the difference is worth the price.
