Product Description:

DMG Designs allows you to quickly and easily produce customized disk images (.dmg files). Automatically include files and directories, background images, volume icons, an alias to the application folder, Software License Agreements (SLA), and much more. DMG Designs can also produce images that automatically grow as files are added, and the image can be encrypted, which allows for images that can be used as secure data backups. Your application's packaging is the first impression many people will get of your product, and with DMG Designs you can produce customized disk images with ease:
  • Save groups of settings called "products"; if done, producing an image is as simple as choosing the product and clicking "Create".
  • Create window configurations that can be used with any product with the same options as in the Finder.
  • Each SLA, can have multiple localizations. You can customize the messages in the system window that displays your SLA. You can even create new localizations for the Disk Image Engine!
  • A background image can be correctly hidden and your disk image's window can be automatically resized to the background image.
  • The dmg can be segmented based on size.
  • DMG Designs can automatically calculate a SHA-1 or MD5 checksum on the final image.
  • Enjoyable to use: Change its appearance from standard, textured, built-in skins, or even custom skins! Changes in views are optionally animated.

What's new in this version:

  • Before, if a user had the "Open new windows in column view" option checked in his or her Finder preferences, the Finder would override the view setting you chose. Now the disk image will force the view you set.
  • Fixed a bug where if you read new release notes from within DMG Designs (like you may be doing right now) and then quit, DMG Designs would crash instead of quitting gracefully.
  • You can change the message colors used in the log. See, the appearance pane of the preferences panel.
  • Updated some of the log messages and the log output.
  • Updated the help with more information on the file system format (disk format) choices and new help covering the new message color settings.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or later

DMG Designs ReviewTrail period/try out problem - Version: 1.1.3, 9/21/2007 02:58PM PST

The above opinion notwithstanding (Excellent, excellent, excellent...), the user interface is a little complicated to figure out in the beginning. Which brings me to my point: the trail period problem. You are given a certain amount of 'try outs" at creating the disk image you want. After that the program doesn't work anymore. The problem is that you are not told how many total 'try outs' you have in the beginning (I guess maybe 10), or even how many you have left. So you play around a bit with all the different options, and there are many, trying this, trying that, and then all of a sudden, before you get what you want, or figure out that this is the software you want to buy, you're told the trail is ended and you have to buy it or forget it. So you know what: I said forget it. The amount of 'try outs' is too low to really try this thing out! This looks like a good program (maybe), but I never had a chance to find out for sure. A message to the developer: please come up with a better trail format, say like a week of unlimited 'try outs." I don't think that is asking too much.

DMG Designs ReviewDMG Designs - excellent, excellent, excellent! - Version: 1.1.3, 6/20/2007 01:10PM PST

I have tried DMGDrop and it is a good product. However, DMG Designs is excellent, excellent, excellent for both creating a background image for the opened mounted volume as well as for imprinting an image onto the mounted volume itself. Did I mention that DMG Designs is intuitive and is exceedingly easy to understand at the outset, although its Help menu is also well presented? There is one thing which DMGDrop does slightly better than DMG Designs and that is to create the .icns file from any other given .jpg, .png, etc. image without having to go to IconComposer. But this is a slight matter as it does everything else excellently, excellently, excellently. By the way, all of this effort at creating a Mac application is intended to be a companion to the web site, Relativity Calculator, www.relativitycalculator.com. Best regards to all the folks at DMG Designs, Don Saar, drdonzi@crocker.com.
