Garmin WebUpdater CommentaryGarmin's Mac support is the best on the market - Version: 2.0.6, 4/25/2009 11:20AM PST

Despite the previous commentary complaining about the lack of support for serial devices, I've found Garmin's support for the Mac to be the best on the market (though not as comprehensive as its Windows support.) Macs have not had serial ports in 10 years, so why someone would buy a GPS unit with a serial interface and proceed to complain about lack of compatibility with the Mac (hardware or software wise) is beyond me. Garmin's website clearly states that WebUpdater for the Mac does not support "Palm, Pocket PC, serial, fixed-mount marine, chartplotters, fishfinders and discontinued devices" Now, for devices with USB ports, I think they should work on getting support up to snuff. For Palms and PocketPCs, they are phasing out support for that stuff as a whole. As for serial ports, you should have thought about that before buying it for a Mac.

I've had my eTrex Vista HCx (with USB port) for about 8 months and love it. Garmin still has some work to do for supporting the Mac as completely as they support Windows, but compared with other vendors' products, this is the best out there. And, to be honest, I'm pretty happy with WebUpdater, RoadTrip, and the Garmin suite overall. There will always be people complaining about lack of support for older equipment, but those who buy should do some basic research before swiping the card.

Garmin WebUpdater CommentaryWill not recognize Garmin unit connected using KeySpan - Version: 2.0.5, 1/10/2009 02:10PM PST

I tried using the WebUpdater to update both a Garmin eTrex and a Garmin Geko connected to a Mac Mini using a KeySpan USA-19HS Serial-to-USB converter. The WebUpdater software fails to recognize the Garmin devices. Garmin is certainly a company that one loves to hate; what with a crippled WebUpdater, firmware bugs in the Geko that have not been corrected and switching to daylight savings time on the wrong date. Pathetic!

Garmin WebUpdater ReviewWorks as it should - Version: 2.0.5, 1/7/2009 01:58PM PST

Installed on Macbook Pro with 10.5.6. Found my NĂ¼vi 255w, and updated the firmware without problem. Version 2.0.5 is supposed to fix compatibly problems with 10.5.6, but I didn't have problems with 2.0.4 and 10.5.6.
