ban90915This should not even be on a public site like this. It should be on the CUPS site ONLY with a big red WARNING, for programmers and mega Geeks ONLY, all others stay away.

All kidding aside. You will need to do a fresh install of your system, or have a fresh bootable clone on your slave drive using SuperDuper in smart mode, back up all files, just in case an Apple update or anything else kills your Mac. ALWAYS have a fresh backup, or your life on your Mac can turn ugly fast. It took 3 major screw ups over the years for me to wise up. One was an early version of Carbon Copy Cloner. I also have an external back up hard drive. Not going to get me again.

Q: So why should you be SCARED of a CUPS update?

zunipusI figured providing something a bit more descriptive than 'run away' might be helpful for inquiring minds.
Simply installing an update of CUPS into Mac OS X, as described in previous posts, will DAMAGE your ability to print in Mac OS X. CUPS is NOT simply a drop-in program for any version of Mac OS X. Apple have to toss in coding of their own to make CUPS work properly for the Mac platform.
So, if you don't know exactly what to do with a CUPS update, just leave the thing alone. Do not read the documentation and get some vague idea that installing the update into Mac OS X might actually do something useful. It won't. Expect the absolute worst, specifically having to reinstall your version of Mac OS X from scratch. There are lots of Open Source apps you can easily update into Mac OS X. This ain't one of them, no way, no how.
Suggestion: Instead go read about, download and install the latest stable version of Gutenprint for Mac OS X. It's not going to hurt anything.

duckhue1You don't need this. It's NOT an update. This is Open Sore software for developers, geeks, and nerds.
Run away, flee for your life.

IlgazMac OS X | Drivers | Printer | CUPS
If you put it (submit) to Printer drivers section, in current nightmare of Leopard printing, EVERYONE will try to download and build it. As result, as you mention: "OS X tools won't be able to setup printer" and they will come to flame you.
OS X is a general consumer Operating System, get used to it and please push Apple Inc. to release a CUPS-HOTFIX very quick. For 90% average users, CUPS=Trouble now.

I taught myself everything I know about my Mac, mostly by trial and error, more error than trial. CUPS was number 2 on the list of errors. Using Carbon Copy Cloner early on, was the number 1 error.
Apple sorta owns CUPS and does use it to built parts of their system software.
Your printer comes with it's own software OR has already been added to Apple's built in system printer list.
If your printer is working, leave well enough alone. If your printer is not printing, contact the maker of the printer, this is not a fix here.
It's for people who understand UNIX and can even write code. Most people can't set up their own email applications, use PhotoShop, or run simple maintenance, and they are going to start using this to fool around with the systems core, I don't think so. Stay smart, keep it simple, and you will stay happy and so will your computer. Stay away from hacks and beware of beta's. ALWAYS have at least one monthly bootable clone using SuperDuper and AppZapper or AppDelete to get rid of trial apps or apps you no longer want. They get rid of everything that goes with those apps and not just the apps themselves. Don't forget to repair permissions often.
I know all this is common basic stuff, but it's geared toward saving newbies pain and suffering.
Since the CUPS folks aren't putting a warning label on, for the masses of people who think this is just an add on to help printing. It's a deep level hack of your systems core. Backup two clones besides your hard drive. One slave drive and one external firewire or usb hard drive, in case you clone something bad to your slave.
If you only have one Hard Drive with one partition, just sell your soul now, cause that's just dumb. Back up, Back up, Back up.
The rest of you know what you're doing, so pass go and collect 200.00. Take my wife, PLEASE.
