Product Description:

LAConvolver is an Audio Units plug-in for convolving the audio stream with an impulse response stored in an audio file. LAConvolver is free but donations will certainly encourage further development.
Features:
  • Support for 1 to 128 audio channels, all with independent impulse responses
  • Most audio file formats supported for the impulse responses
  • Automatic sample rate conversion of impulse responses if needed
  • Low latency, determined by number of frames per slice
  • Sensing of silence in impulse responses gives low CPU load for delay effects
Known issues:
  • Universal but not optimized for Intel
  • No support for raw PCM files
Performance:
The CPU-load is dependent on the number of frames per slice, larger slices give lower CPU-load. On an iBook G4 800 MHz with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz and 4,096 frames per slice the CPU-load is about 3% per second of impulse response.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or later
  • A Power PC G4 or G5 or an Intel processor

LAConvolver Commentaryv .3 works well, improved interface features - Version: 0.3, 12/3/2008 09:23PM PST

Though it still doesn't have a "pretty" graphical interface, it is elegantly simple and has worked really well for me on intel macbook, and PPC G5 dual 2ghz machines. I have a nice collection of impulse responses that I have gathered from free sources. I use this plug-in regularly and it is my go-to reverb.

Now with LAconvolver, I have a freeware (donation-ware) reverb unit that is better than ANY other reverb I have access to in software or hardware.

LAConvolver Reviewv.2 works well in DP, GB and other AU hosts - Version: 0.2, 7/15/2007 03:06PM PST

I have tested LAConvolver in DP v5.12, and GB and it works perfectly as of version 0.2. The simple interface allows you to select separate impulse response files for multiple channels. I tested it with reverb IR's and it works beautifully. With the many excellent free impulse response files that are available, I was able to create a reverb that is comparable in quality to Altiverb ($595.00).

LAConvolver offers wet & dry gain controls. If you want to control other things, you can use other plug-ins either before or after in the signal chain. For example, insert a delay to control pre-delay, insert pre or post EQ or filters to control tone.

This is the first free convolution software that I have found that works for intel and PPC based machines. I have tested it on my macbook and on my G5 dual 2Ghz. Works like a charm. Simple to use!!!

Lernvall Audio has a real winner with LAConvolver. I was happy to send a small donation to support their efforts!!!!

LAConvolver CommentaryWhat a welcome alternative to the EX$PENSIVE alternatives!! - Version: 0.1, 6/22/2007 07:59PM PST

Even though this plug-in is in it's early stages, it shows great promise. I want to encourage users to support this developer. If this plugin is developed further, it will be an excellent alternative to very high priced convolution software that is out there.

This plug-in allows you to have completely independent stereo convolution with separate files selectable for each side. I tried LAConvolver in GarageBand and it worked fine. In this version 0.1, there was a gain boost that caused some clipping to occur. The developer said that gain controls would be included in a future version.
